There have been times, shooting in a timed match such as a stake shoot, when I managed to reload in 40 seconds or so. Sometimes a bit faster if I just shoved a naked ball sans patch into the bore and ran it down with the rod. In those situations I had everything I needed exactly where I could get to them in a hurry. Balls were in a seperate pocket of my bag. A strip of lubed patching material was tied to a leather whang and hanging from the front strap of the bag. Short starter and patch knife were also attached to the bag in easy reach. Priming powder was in a small horn hanging above the main horn. Most importantly, I had practiced a lot. I still managed to dry ball the rifle on a couple of occasions and on one memorable day I fired my ramrod downrange. Either one is guaranteed to put you in last place in a shooting match.
My dear old pappy used to tell me to never try for fast. Fast, he said, comes naturally if you work on smooth. Make every motion smooth and the speed will come. He would also say, when he saw me getting impatient, "We ain't being attacked by Comanches. We got time."
