Ok so what is the best home made ball/patch lube. :idunno:

Not trying to sound like wisenheimer, but the best patch lube is the one that you like and works for you.
There are 'lebenty-twenty-dozen, maybe more, formulas out there all with guys saying theirs is the best.
Dutch's dry lube is well thought of.
Webb Terry's teflon is loved by some.
Various moose snots and milks are popular.
Currently I am using beeswax/sperm whale oil mix.
When that is gone I'll be using beeswax/peanut oil mix.

I use # lebenty-nineteen-eight(b). Crisco, beeswax and Burt's Bees Hand salve.(b) is the winter formula (a) is the summer formula :stir:

I am going to pile on with Stumpkiller as I use both his recipes Moose juice and Moose snot. I use the Moose Juice applied and allowed to dry just as a range lube and the Moose snot for hunting if I ever find the time to get back into the woods................watch yer top knot.............

I use 1 part melted beeswax, and two parts cheapest olive oil. So for a small batch that's 1/2 cup of beeswax, to 1 cup of heated, cheapest olive oil, then allowed to cool. IF you are looking for a lube for conicals, you want a "stiffer" grease, so go with equal amounts of oil and beeswax.

I am wondering why peanut oil, when the sperm whale oil runs out??

I use my above recipe as it was non-toxic, and my son was known around the neighborhood when very small as Danger Boy, for he had no fear, and got into everything. Plus the stuff works on mocs as water repellent, on cheeks and lips to prevent windburn and chapping as well as on hands, and can be used for an emergency candle.

Plain olive oil. Not only the best but the easiest and the cheapest. (You don't need 'extra virgin', just the stuff Walmart has.

Olive oil is great. Pure jojoba oil is great. You can mix the natural oil of your choice with lard to get a mix that you like. Bees wax will thicken it up if the lard and oil mix is too thin for you. Spit is an excellent lube for target shooting. Many people will put a patch in their mouth to wet it and just keep it there until they are ready to re-load, Then they use the patch in their mouth and replace it with another to get it wet until it is needed. Not juicy, just damp with spit. My personal preference is a patch just moistened with straight Ballistol. I find that it really reduces the fouling. But, in the final analysis, the best lube is the one your rifle likes. Muzzleloading rifles are like kids, each one has its likes and dislikes. You just have to experiment to find what your rifle likes and stick with it. It's like the women say "You have to kiss a lot of toads before you find Prince Charming."

Billnpatti is right on the money. It seems like every rifle I have likes something a bit different.

I've been trying different patch lubes in the .54 GPR and there is a big difference between what it likes and what the .50 GPR prefers.

I got in a few hours of range time this morning and tried out pillow ticking patches that were soaked in straight Ballistol and allowed to dry.

BIG improvement over patches damp or wet with Ballistol,Shenandoah valley lube, Olive oil or Bore butter.

Interestingly (to me anyway) This rifle does much better with 3F than with 2F powder just like the .50 GPR.

Half the fun for me is dinking around with various loads and components anyway.
