After my previous success hunting goats,I decided to be adventurous this morning and instead of following the switchback track to where I KNOW the goats are watering,I decided to try working my way through the scrub and by doing so wasted a bunch of time and energy and have probably missed out on catching the goats on water. Just sitting here watching the birds and eating an apple before I wander off again. Brought my Dikar. 50 hawken, Matilda, today, as I've run out of the powder I was using in Jemima and haven't had a chance to see if 2f will shoot the maxi balls well. Just good to be in the bush.

I have sat many watering holes and have never had success. Given my patience and hunting time are limited, so I don’t have a week to sit a hole. One day I was backpacking and inadvertently camped next to a big watering hole. Completely whipped from the hike, I set up my little tent and crashed hard. At 3AM nature called urgently and I got up and walked about 50 ft. away toward the water hole I didn’t know was there. Must’ve been 50 animals, deer and elk drinking from the hole in the middle of the night. They scattered in such a panic when my smell showed up there. I’m surprised I didn’t get run over. After that I stopped sitting holes, except for turkey, who roost at night and always drink in the day.

Well, home again after another successful hunt. Really busted my arse, got into some new country I haven't explored yet. Went looking for a little dam that shows up on satellite pictures, after bashing through thick arsed scrub it was dry. Spooked a mob of goats I didn't even see, then found 2 resting up by the boundary fence who took off before I could cock Matilda. A quick bleat at them stopped the nanny at about 40m and she copped a 50 cal round ball to the chest. She made it about 40m down hill, then I heard her death groans. As soon as she made noise,a big heap of goats started bleating and bellowing from where I'd just come from ! So I started sneaking up hill and there was a mob of about 30 bashing and fighting each other through the thick cabbage gum scrub. 3 times I lined one up only to lose the shot due to the scrub and them moving about. Eventually though, this billy made the mistake of standing still at 20m and copped a round ball too, unfortunately a tad high,so I gave him a coup de grace to the noggin. Then came the hard work of butchering etc,and climbing down off the hill. Scratched myself up pretty good but them the brakes. Property owners are absolutely tickled pink with my efforts and I've gone from someone the husband wasn't too sure about letting on,to having pretty much free invite to hunt whenever I want. Its a nice feeling 😊

That looks like a tone of fun!! I agree with FishnRod! The billy is gorgeous!! The thickness of brush brings back memories of hunting in the jungle as a youth! Thanks for sharing your hunt!

Used to have have goats but never ate one. Glad to see that you use them rather just leave the carcass. I would imagine that it can be cooked up pretty tasty. I know wild goats can be pretty wary so hunting them in cover could prove challenging.
I use what I can carry. The billy was rank and was left. The landowner's have a legal obligation to control feral animals on their property, and in this case it means shooting them, and as many as possible really. In national parks here they shoot feral animals from helicopters and leave them to ror, every single one. That's disgusting in my eyes. So I try to use as much as I can,but I don't balk at leaving something like a stinky old billy.

I can understand that, those that have never smelled a ripe Billy goat have no idea of how bad they can stink 🤮.
