How many of you hunt medium game with a .40 cal? Whilst it doesn't really apply to Australia, I get the impression that in the US some states allow 'big game hunting' with minimum .38 Cal and others with minimum .45 Cal. Are these regs for PRB only or do they include conicals?

I was thinking of using .40 Cal PRB for target and minies for hunting. Most shots will be 50 yrds or shorter as I enjoy the skill of the stalk.

What do you think is appropriate (mind you, I'm not talking about water buffalo - more like kangroos and smaller, maybe a pig or two.)

Here's a recent picture of my completed rifle after the conversion.

Cheers

Many states and hunters find the .40 round ball fine for deer sized game at moderate ranges, I have taken several deer with this cal.

I've seen that before by someone who wanted to get the rear sight a little further away to get it into sharper focus

Do you know of a company that makes conicals for the .40cal muzzleloader?

I don't think anybody does now, but I think I know where I can find an old Lyman mold.

45 is the smallest you can have where Im from, so thats what I build.

I cut the dove tails for my sights where I wanted them. Just for my old eyes

As you can see the front is at the very end, and the rear is forward of the grip.

and they work just dandy.

Glad to meet ya

Thats why it's called the land of OZ.
Yes the rear sight is on backwards. I found that this gave better eye relief, a clearer sight picture with less eye strain - and thats from someone with good eye sight.
I think they make a 316 grain minie in 40 cal for the target target shooters.
I think I would like to stick with PRB though, and think 40 cal has the makings with an appropriate hunting load, particularly on deer and smaller.
I tend to think that accuracy is more important than knockdown power, but I do understand that a balance has to be reached between to two.
My father, many years ago, was an overseer on a South Australian sheep station. They shot most of the Roos there with .22LR . Mind you this was generally done at 50 yards or closer, and with head shots.
