Another version is the CVA Hunter Carbine in 54Cal. It has a 24" barrel with a 1:48 twist. I shot my elk with one this year.

It is what got me started down this road.

Try T7 FFFg, but reduce your maximum load by 10%. So if the max load is 100 grs of powder, use 90 gr. Should give you the same velocity. I used the CVA Deerslayer 375 gr for the elk. I wanted something heavier so I can get through and through passage of the bullet. That is what kicked me off down this rabbit hole

If you can find them a 450 grain Plains bullet should work well.

Getting drawn for a bull elk here in Az is very difficult, so next year I am just putting in for cow elk and if drawn want to use my .54

Check out the No Excuses bullets also. Their 485 gr comes in two different 54 cal sizes .451 or .452

@Dobegrant 90 grains of T7 FFFg with a 485 gr bullet out of a 25" barrel should give you 1400-1450 fps. Be sure to use an oversized, over powder wad.

P-Max black powder internal ballistics Add 10% to velocity and pressure. I have found that very close for T7 instead of BP
