That 7.9# weight in combo with the longish barrel tells me it will be a delight to carry in the field yet "hang" well for offhand shooting. I can't find better words to describe my ideals for a shooter to be carried far and long on hunts.

Oh yeah, and it's a looker too!

A beautiful rifle, but I would have opted for a .45 because the smallest caliber legal to hunt deer in Indiana is .44, and I have never seen a .44 rifle. There is not much difference in size betweewn the .40 and .45 if you are after squirrels. Some, Me included, think a .40 is too big for squirrels. Unless you make head shots, (shoot them in the face), there won't be much left to pick up. Keep yer powder dry.......robin :hmm:

I don't know what you paid for it but it sure looks nice. As long as you are satisfied with the price, that is all that matters. I will say that I think the .40 caliber is at the upper limit for a squirrel rifle. Most "squirrel" rifles are .36 caliber or smaller. On the other hand, as long as you head shoot your squirrels, bore size won't matter. In any event, enjoy your rifle, it looks like a good one and has a mighty fine appearance that you can be proud of.

.40 caliber with 20 grains of 3f works great in my flintlock for squirrels. The ball punches a nice hole, without tearing up the meat.

Your link was to their parts set. Are you building it (from a pre-carve)? I built that gun about 4 years ago in a 45. It's the most accurate BP rifle I have (or, the one I shoot the best). The BP hook and TG spurs really make a difference in how I can hold it in standing position. Mine was a 34" GM barrel with square bottom rifling.

That is one really good looking rifle you bought. I am sure you can expect very fine accuracy. .40 is a good all around caliber; but I agree a tad large for squirrels. But if you load sensibly and take mostly head shots, you'll do just ffine.

Thanks guys! Can't wait for it to show up. I went with 40cal for head shots on squirrels and it's large enough for coyotes and I hear that 40cal is inherently accurate. I have my 54cal GPR for deer.

Yup. Just fine to get a special gun for special uses. No need for one gun to be best at everything. I'm betting it won't be your last!

Nice looking rifle...you done good! Find a load with top accuracy though...those 93 grain .395" balls can be messing on body hits! :haha:

The .40 is a great rifle for squirrels up to varmints & any critters smaller than deer. Some use the .40 for deer; but I've never hunted in a state where the .40 was legal for deer. My pick is the .36 but I like my .40 a lot.

Yes your rifle looks good. I like the 40 caliber, I go to lots of rendezvous and they usually put on a squirrel shoot. I use mine for this purpose, They limit the caliber to 40 and lower. Mine shoots real nice and I have won many shoots with it. 390 ball with 50 grains of 3 f and it shoots real straight. I use other guns to shoot deer with. Hope you enjoy your new rifle. Eldo

I have a Hawken Squirrel rifle that John Bergmann built for me in 40 caliber. Out of all of the percussion guns I own its my favorite one to shoot and very accurate. Nice looking rifle Boomerang
