The last day of the waterfowl season was January 27th. Tom Slaughter and I were jumping some stock ponds out in the desert when I spotted an old cattle skull under some mesquite bushes. About 10 feet or so from the skull was this little horn, just about covered with dirt and mud. I picked it up, I had never done any horn work, but thought, “What the heck, this might make a good little priming horn.”

Turning a rear plug from a hardware store drawer pull and a spout from a brass air compressor quick-coupler.

I got this little lathe a long time ago for light turning like this job. I used the drill in the holder before that. I’ve posted in the builders forum, a couple of tools for the home workshop that I think some of you can use.

We got it down to the brass tacks.

I put a strap on for a neck carrier. The plug was turned from a piece from the worthless flexible ramrod I bought at last year’s western regionals. I just couldn’t trust that rod to seat the last little bit with a tight patch in the 32.

That’s my first horn, folks! It may not be the last! I hope to see some of you at the Western Regional next week. I'll be hangin' at the Mountain Man's tent. Drop by and say hello.

Nice work on your first horn! Keep at it and you will have a full time job. That is a neat little lathe; I've got a couple of the little Unimat lathes for small stuff like that in wood or metal. Emery

I got that lathe from a place called Leichtung workshop. It's a mailorder outfit. I haven't ordered from them in a long time since I stopped doing big wood projects 4 or 5 years ago. maybe you can findthem on the net. wirewiz

Thats a mighty neat idea of using those brass air compressor fittings and re working them. Good job on the horn too
