Absolutely, I got this for one purpose, to keep track of throat erosion on an unmentionable new fangled bang stick.

Also handy to inspect the upper end components of aircraft & automotive engines

Agree. I would use a piece of scotch brite and just insert it down over the bad spot down by the breech and concentrate back and forth over that one spot to see if you can smooth down the edges of the gashes. Check this out: LINK

The You Tube link inserted is a good one. The only thing I do different is to pull the breech plug and clamp the barrel in a padded vise. I have also poured a lead lapping plug around a steel patch rod tip and used valve grinding compound to lap the barrel, that way I get the lands and groves polished at the same time. I understand not everyone has the equipment or ability to pull the breech or pour a lead lap. But I like to "refresh" the whole bore and yes it's labor intensive.
edit: You could also try fire lapping with greased patches and valve grinding compound. Get in a lot of shooting in that way.

I am going to shoot it, see if load development can improve the accuracy, I worry about erasing the lands. If the drop in replacement works out, I will save up and send this one to Mr. Hoyt and have it turned into a 54.
