i want to get a flinter i need advice/opinions on what i should buy. I.E...... new/used. i am fairly mechanically incline and have built a couple of kit guns. so i am mainly asking for reccomendations on brand/maker staying within a military man meager pay. thanks in advance for yalls help.

What price range? do you have anything to trade?--spud :applause:

Unless you can find a used one there isn't much of anything in that price range. I think even the Traditions kits are more than that. But don't give up hope, keep an eye on the classifieds and auctions.

Try to find a used Leman Great Plains Rifle or TC. I've seen plenty of used ones in that range. Then refinish and maybe add a few personal touches.

that is what i am planning on doing trying to find one indecent shape around here is kinda hard.

The leman was an actual gun, a real design, and the Lyman is a modern composite rendition of a plains rifle. There are Leman kits available but are out of your price range. The kit from mid south is probably your best deal, unless you can find a used one somewhere.

Bill

I started with nothing, and I still have most of it!

Lymans are actual guns too. They shoot real bullets and burn real black powder. :v

jax1-2,
For a new gun, IMHO you can't beat the Great Plains Rifle for the money. It's a good, accurate rifle. And it looks good too.('cept for the writin' on the barrel)

I think the Lyman Trade Rifle is cheaper. Might look at those too. Different style, different twist.

T/C makes a real good gun too but the price is higher. If used is OK and you like their style, check the T/Cs out.

You can always save up and get the Leman too...

your price range pretty much restricts you to a used piece, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing- the overwhelming majority of mine are used (especially after i shoot them, clean them and put them away, hahaha).

hang in there- i know that the DoD isn't exactly a munificent employer when it comes to actual put-it-in-your-pocket paychecks. hell, some of get the stars and some of us get the scars. if you're ever around the Ft Bragg area, check out Cumberland Knife&Gun (if they're still there) when i was there, they usually had good stuff, and the quality was always first rate.

if you run across a used T/C, i can assure you that you'll still have it long after you forgot how much you paid for it.

good luck- the search is often half the fun

Hey, guys, please be easy on me, now that I'm another year older. I know Lymans are real guns, and I'm not the PC police. I only differenciated the two because the question was asked. My only concern, and I think it's that of some others on the Forum as well, is that some newbie, that wants to go PC correct, doesn't go and drop 2, 3, or 400 dollars on a gun thinking it's period correct. I don't really care what people shoot, just trying to prevent costly mistakes. That and we don't want people going to the dark side with those frontloading centerfire rifles :rotf: While I no longer own one, I think the Lymans are about the best bang for the buck, and are the closest to being a true plains rifle.

Bill

I started out with nothing, and still have most of it left!

Excellant post and that is what it is all about, but for some reason there are those who nearly always try to deflect the well intended efforts of those who try to provide the answers to the questions.

Bill, I knew what you meant but the way you wrote it struck me funny and I couldn't resist pokin' at ya a lil bit. :winking:

Made it sound like the GPR is a plastic toy. :haha: :v

Dear Sir, If I may so humbly suggest---In your price range you should really consider the Lyman Great Plains in a 54 cal flintlock. Save a few more $$ and get one in a kit that you can build and customize yourself. For somthing in a production gun you will find no better than the Lyman. Some come close and others are just junk. Lyman will be a good shooter at the range and a great gun for hunting. JMHO---based on owning one--the only thing better is my custom but that is a bit out of that range. :hatsoff:
