With my Great Plains I found I really liked the TC flints. The real nice thing is once you wear out one side you flip it around and you are ready for another 50 shots. May I offer some advise--When you put the flint in the first time, bring your hammer back to full cock then relase slowly with your thumb in contact---I didnt and the first time I pulled the trigger my flint was slightly off center and hit the side of the barrel---Each time I see that mark :shake:
As for building it yourself---If you dont want it to look traditional then go hog wild---I would. Once you are hooked long enough you will want even a longer gun (custom)! Ask me how I know.
Next ---cleaning is important and a bit different with this gun...Get a 32 cal bore brushand a 54 cal bore brush----Im going to do a post on this--reason being there is a small chamber in the rear of the barrel that doesnt get cleaned by the 54cal brush (54 cal brush is too big to get in) I also like to use cut up Tshirts for cleaning patches... I had close to 100 tshirts last year and had to get rid of some ----Couldnt just toss them so I cut some up and now I like these as cleaning patches--nice and thick to get into the grooves of the barrel. :hatsoff:

i received my rifle today and have completed the fitting. tomororw the sanding draw filing and polishing of cast parts. then wait on the dang mail for finishing chemicals. i may have to shoot it in the white i dont know how long i can wait.

ok gun is complete i will try to post some pics when i can find my camera charger. left heart off and did a grey finish on the metal. looks pretty god no stain on stock just sealed and finished looks pretty good.

alright i finally got to the range today and shot it  the only problem is i have a bit of hang time on shooting :cursing: I.E.. i pull trigger and about 1/2 second later main charge fires. so i drilled vent to 5/64s same thing i am wondering if my hole is in the correct position?(insert joke here)the vent hole is 1/16 above pan and at the rear of pan. i might need to do some dremel work. i couldnt get to a 25 yrd area but at 50 witht the delay i was hitting 2 1/2 low to the right but grouping at about 2" not bad for shooting a rock lock for the first time :v well any help guys and i will be in your debt.

What powder are you using for main charge and prime? and how much powder in the prime, often you have to fiddle around with the amount of prime usually less is best..assume we are talking real BP?

i use 3f i use for main charge very little still below vent hole. had only one or two flash in the pans and about 3 no pan fires. and yes it is real black powder

"Exactly how did I "try to deflect the well intended efforts" of anyone?'

My post was not directed at you Jethro, it was just a statement in agreement with Bills post about trying to steer people in the right direction, quite often there are those who do try to push what they have or "think" may be a ggod thing be it a good choice or not and often these folks speak from a place of little knowledge or experience and can be influential when the end result is less dollars, but this is not what I was trying to say your post was doing.

You may need to play around with the flint position or type of flints, you need the pan to go off nearly all the time then see what the hangfire or flash in the pan ratio is and work on that, it wil come I have heard these guns are pretty reliable.
