mr. Dickert thanks you for your input but i have a few questions. should i get 50 or 54 i want to quite a bit of deer hunting and maybe some bear and moose, but i still wanna be able to shoot it at the range all day without having my shoulder in traction. Would you fine gentlemen be able to help through learning how to load it and working up a load I.E.......a bunch of noob questions. :blah: Also what is the twist on this gun if any of ya know thanks in advance for the help guys.

Get the .54 cal Great Plains rifle with the 1-60" twist. You can always load a big gun down for target shooting but you can't always get the power you need by loading a smaller cal up. 50-70 gr for plinking and 80-90 for hunting will do ya with a ticking patched .530 or .535 rd ball.

I agree with Rebel. I have two .54 GPRs. One percussion and one flintlock. .54 cal. round ball will put anything down in this country. You can shoot .54 PRB all day long without so much as a stiff arm. They are a pleasure to shoot, but will have more wallop that a .50 at the business end. Can't say enough about the .54. I just love them  .

alright it is on its way thanks cowpoke for the link and i will be bombarding yall with questions soon about the workings and such.

Keep us informed---I would have suggested the 54 cal flintlock but didnt get back here till now...sorry--- You will be happy no matter which one you purchased. IF (54 cal) try a .015 patch and .530 round ball with 40 gr 3F and work up in say 5 to 10 gr increments to get used to your gun. Start at say 15 yards and move out to 25 yards. Its easier to focus at a close distance and it will not make much diff moving back to 25. (A freind mentioned this to me when I got a new gun and it worked great) I hunt with 80-85 gr of 3F with that gun with the above mentioned patch and ball combo.

i got the kit in 54 flint. i will have to give that a try and see how it works out. I am kind of leary about shooting it for the first time and all but it either will or i will fix it lol. should be here in 2 days so i will build it and get it to a range and see if i can do some damage. how much powder do yall use in the 54 for treerats? oh and thanks to everyone that posted the info and the help in making this decision.

Congrats on your purchase! I think you'll be happy with it.
Plenty of help available here if you run into questions when building it. Some guys have done some really cool things with their GPR kit guns! Do a search and check 'em out.
I would suggest reading the flintlock shooting tips sticky topic before you go shooting. Some good stuff in there. And be sure to get all the factory shipping goo out of the barrel first.
Enjoy!

I use the same ball and patch as Dickert, but use 80 grains of 2Fg Goex. It's dead on at 50 yards. Go to The Gun Builder's Bench from the main forum here. Several threads about building a GPR kit with lots of info. You have to decide if you are going to blue or brown. Personally, I like the brown. It gives it a special look. What are you going to finish the stock with? Tung oil, Tru Oil or linseed oil. The nice thing about a kit is that you end up with a rifle that YOU like. Not one that you had to settle for off the shelf. By the way, they take a 3/4 inch flints. Check Track of the Wolf for some of your supplies http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(0hbhz5r2hyazqw55n2nloa55))/Index.aspx . This kit is pretty easy. Just take your time and you'll have a rifle that will last you for life  .

i looked couldnt find a whole lot i could use but i will make this rifle my own :v . but in all of my searching i have found nothing on how to set the flint in the jaws, the rest seems pretty straight forward almost like a caplock minus the pan prime. well i am off to Bass Pro Shops to look for some accoutrements for the interim until i can get a custom set, i probably will have better luck waiting for my house to walk off, it seems to me most store are gearing towards the in-liner crowd nowadays and this worries me something fearce.

If you can't find the stuff you're looking for locally, check the member resources links here on the Forum. Track of the Wolf and October Country are good just off the top of my head.
My GPR likes the flint to be flat side up/ bevel side down toward the frizzen. I use a small piece of buckskin between the flint and the jaws to help grip the flint. Trim off excess buckskin. Mount it so there is just a slight bit of a gap between the flint and the frizzen at half-cock. The gap should be even all the way across so the flint will hit square. Make sure it is centered where it won't hit the barrel or anything else too. And tighten it down good.
Works good for me.

Jax,
Track has some good prices on flints, English 3/4 inch square for $1.00 each. Be sure to buy plenty at one time. They also carry Laurel Mountain Forge Barrel Brown & Degreaser, if you decide to brown. I install my flints just like jethro224. As issues come up, just ask. Everyone here is willing to help.

well big surprise bass pro has nothing traditional. so i came hokme and ordered off of the internet seems like my only saving grace anymore.

i guess i need to make a billows and kiln and just leave the stores to their own demise. :yakyak: naw just gonna order off of the internet from now on. now if i could just find a rapine bag mold in 54.

Alright Iordered everything that Iwas missing which was'nt much since i have a underhamer, which now belong to me wife, still not sure how that came to be :shocked2: but i ordered: flint, leather for flints, flintlock rod accputrements, lmf browning and degreaser, lmf permalyn finish and sealer pluse a weaping heart for the cheek peice and lastly a side plate so I will be busy for a day or two. serously i am greedy when it comes to building somthing the last rifle took 3 days and i only slept once lol my wife says i have a problem :youcrazy:
