i gave into my fear and bought powder

ill be the first to admit i feel like a little like a sucker for given into my fears. but i put in a 25 pound order in at powder inc a few minutes ago.

-9 pounds goex F (they are outa KIK)
-1 pound KIK FFFF
-5 pounds KIK FF
-10 pounds KIK FFF

i guess i figure at the very least i will be well stocked on powder for a long while. i typically onley order 10 pounds every 6-8 months but if those nazis are gonna start chasing BP it could become hard to get.

I just ordered some too, but before talk of regs. I went to pick up some local and they were out. I also saw they had raised the price to 25 bucks plus 2 for tax. That was enough motivation for me.

I can understand the fear. However, this is why pistol ammo in general has tripled in price since 2008 and supply is short.

I think we're becoming our own worst enemies in this regard. We're drying up supply and increasing the cost to shoot.

Go ahead and hord, maybe they will have to hire some more help to keep up and it will create a few jobs, probly get filled by people from another country but at least somebody will be happy.

i have a couple muskets and im looking at getting a large bore matchlock. i like F powder for these as it feels more correct in the 18th century guns. with this 9 pounds ill have 10 pounds of F powder which wont last long as these muskets eat powder like you wouldnt believe. my 71 cal musket uses 110 grain paper cartridges.

thanks for the kind words all, it was indeed expensive but it actually came out to $14 a pound shipped so the price was fair. modern shooters onley wish they could get smokeless powder at a price even close to that.

as for the single pound of FFFF, i like it for priming and my little Liegi pistol also uses it. with this pound ill have 2 pounds which will last me a looong time.

There are some reports that black powder may have been used in the pressure-cooker bombs at the Boston Marathon. Will this result in additional regs on the sale of black powder?

If the Boston bombs employed black powder, then the next question is whether it was purchased at retail or if it was homemade. It certainly could have been homemade from readily available materials.

Further restricting the retail sale of 1-lb cans of black powder wouldn't accomplish much, if anything. So, I don't expect any regulatory changes.

Here in Illinois, which is pretty restrictive, I can easily buy black powder from licensed distributors - but I have to present my state firearm owners I.D. card (FOID) and other info. No problem.

What the heck Matt! 25 pounds if you can swing it is a smart buy not hoarding It's a way to reduce the expense of our sport. When I see the posts about 25 dollars a pound powder at Bass Pro I often tell about my order from Graff that ended up being 14 dollars a pound. I just may order some more thanks to your post. With me money is not the problem. However I get nervous when I have a bunch of black powder sitting around. I have some friends that have remote barns so I may call in a few favors.

The rising powder costs are causing our sport to get more costly so any way to reduce the cost is a good thing. Thank's again for waking us up! Geo. T.

its a shame they wouldnt let me order 30 pounds, really coulda used 10 pounds of FF powder. ill stash away 5 pounds each of F, FF, and FFF just in case the nazi's really do come after BP with any effort. good thing real BP doesnt have a shelf life.

I've been thinking about ordering 25# for several months now. I was able to but 2 pounds at a dealer 35 miles away, but I've used that up, and that dealer hasn't had any for weeks now. I don't know of any other dealer within 80 miles, So I ordered some from the same place as you did. I got a much better price than I can buy locally, and probably have enough to last for years. I'm getting the Old Eynsford because I've heard good things about it. At any rate, I'll have plenty to work up some good loads, and stick with one type powder.

I have an old freezer that doesn't run, that I can convert into a storage box for now. I'll build a fireproof box with a blow-off lid, for permanent storage.

I wouldn't call it hoarding. I shoot up quite a bit of powder in a short period of time.

I just went to Mountain Man Pawn in Fayetteville and bought 5 lbs of Goex fffg. Need to get ready for the spring muzzle shoot at Luther Owens Park in Berryville.

BTW they only had 1 lb left and didn't think they would get any more in soon.

I don't think they'll be able to pass any additional restrictions, at least not right now and not at the Federal level. They didn't even have enough votes for their stupid universal registration, I mean background check bill.

At one time, smokeless powder (and probably BP) could only be purchased in person from an FFL. That law accomplished nothing except to inconvenience law-abiding citizens and thankfully was repealed.

Now here in CA a bill is being written to ban mail order ammo purchases. I don't know if it will include BP and/or smokeless powder as well. I'm sure it will ban as much as they think they can get away with and them some. They don't even bother anymore to hide the fact that they are attacking lawful owners and the shooting sports.

I need to get me a lot of powder. I am just getting into bp and leaving the centerfires. Originally it was due to the lack of ammo and the stupid price that people have chased it up to. Then I started shooting bp and having so much fun that I am thinking about selling a Colt AR to fund a couple muzzle loaders, moulds, caps, powder and other things. BP is not cheaper but it is more fun!

I beg to respectfully disagree.

With most of our ML'ers, we shoot charges from 50-90 grains. At $14 pound, that works out to 100 shots to a can, or $0.14 for powder (70 gr. charge). If you shoot cap guns, add in another $0.05. If you buy your RB's, another $0.10, and $0.02 for a patch and lube. Grand total. $0.31 per shot.

In comparison a 30-`06 reload. Bullet $0.18. Powder $0.18. Primer $0.03. case free to $0.15 $$ Total $0.39-$0.54. If you buy factory ammo the price is even higher.

Of course, different calibers have different price points.

So, if you buy 25 pounds of BP, that's basically 2500 shots. Lots and lots of CF rifle guys buy or make their ammo in 1000 round batches
