went out hunting today in PA's deer season figureing the deer would be movin with that nasty storm a comin with my flintlock....was on the train tracks i usely hunt and seen a deer off in the distance in a grass field bout 150 - 200 yards out....got down from the tracks and went to take a chance and stalk this lone deer....took bout 45 minutes to cover a round about way to this deer of bout 1/4 mile....got to within 20 yards and got ready to take the shot what did i see on this deers head but 2 little furry bumps :shake: ....thought i was going to get a nice tasting little doe but turns out to be a he....PA has a 3 point to one side rule but we can shoot a button buck and tag it as a doe....but that's not me, so till next week i'll have to think bout how tasty that doe i thought it was would have tasted :v ............bob

Good luck and keep trying. I too passed up a bunch of deer this season, because they where too small or just couldn't tell. My patience did pay off in the end, and I enjoyed getting close to all the deer. I ended up with 2 spike bucks, one with 4" horns the other had 6". They each had good body size and I got a lot of good eating ahead.

Heyyy, ya' did the right thing. Gotta leave the seed stock if you want bucks down the road.

Hope you told him to "Drive careful now.".

Yep, there's been many a deer that was saved by the buttons. I have killed a few that I thought were does but I try and let 'em grow up.
Good luck next time out!

Hey at least you saw a deer. Good choice and better luck next time ... there always a next time :)

White Buffalo:
I try to do the same thing. I have in the past mistakenly shot a couple button bucks but I do prefer to let them grow.
I got a buck on the first day of Pa. with my modern firearm and am now going to hunt the rest of our season for doe with the Hawkins. We have another week ya know.

It was still fun wasn't it. That wind helps a bunch when sneaking up on deer. Glad you passed on him; maybe next time you sneak up on him he will be a ten pointer.

Hi Bob,
What gun are you using? Did you ever finish that long rifle? I may have missed the post if you did.

Great hunt. I'm impressed by both your stalking & your restraint.
As for the button buck, I've dropped them thinking they were does. I have real trouble judging the size of single deer when the light is low. I guess I need to put up some of those measuring sticks like they have an amusement park rides, "deer must be this tall to ride home in my truck" :rotf:

It probably isn't any good. It needs to be tested here at my test facility first. :winking:

150 yards down to 20??? You must have had a knife duct taped to the front of that front stuffer!!! :) That's good sneaking. Better luck next time for ya!

it's called maximum production and it takes me bout 45 minutes to rig um up like that, but 8 hours later after smelling them it's not hard downing bout a pound of it in one sitting....that's from my 205 lb dressed buck from 04 and that's only half of what i cut up from just the back straps only, i still had that much waiting to go in the oven still in the juice....usely my 3 rd deer all goes to makeing jerky....once my girls find out i got a deer and make this stuff there isn't much i can do to keep it around long :v .............bob

Without moving the posts to another forum, could you say the temperature you use? Many thanks, Ron in FL

Guys...a marvelous invention call binoculars would have solved both your problems. :winking:

I guess, but deer come and go in seconds in the thick stuff I hunt. I've honestly taken shots that went from hearing hooves in the leaves that became a deer about to pass out of my opening to woods full of smoke in two seconds. No time for "glassing", and that would be a lot of movement within 10 to 40 yards of a very observant whitetail at his/her eye level.

yeah but i wouldn't of had so much fun doing that, and the look on that button bucks face as i stood out from behind the cover and said "hello there little fellow" :rotf: he lauched bout 6' in the air twisted so i thought he was going to break his back, fell down when he landed then tore outta there as if his tail was on fire....even though it was raining as all hell and i was pretty wet and when i was leaveing all my flintlock did was fsssst in the pan to unload it....but it was good to be out there after my surgery even if i didn't get a deer :v ................bob

I hunted all 21 days and never killed a deer. I only saw three during daylight. It was still a wonderful hunt! Backstrap, jerky, and all is nice, but the season is about hunting for me. To have stalked close to one and let him go is one of the best hunts there is. It lets you know you are still within your own rules. A friend of mine that has since passed killed a big doe with his bow. While dragging it out, he found another deer caught in a fence. He turned it loose and went back to dragging. Nothing of hunting in killing a deer caught in a fence. You sleep really well after a hunty like that!
