I took your advice, sort of..

I'd posted about shooting my 54 GPR last week and a few suggestions were made. I didn't expect to get back to the range before deer season. However a couple days ago the temps were near 50 so I made some patch lube of a 1:6 Ballistol water mix and lubed up the yard of Hobby Lobby pillow ticking I'd purchased. Then layed it out to dry. Cleaned and lubed the set triggers, again, but did no polishing. Today the wind was calm and the temps in the mid 30's so I headed out to the range. I only fired 15 shots but the last shot was as easy to load as the first shot. The picture is the last three shot group, not the best of the lot but representative. Not match grade but defiantly Minute of Whitetail as I'll be hunting from a stand and shots will be <50 yards. .530 RB and 75 gns of FFFG Goex.

Don’t see a problem? Everything you’ve described is spot on. The accuracy is definitely good enough for hunting, steel targets, or a woods walk. Seems to have licked any fowling issues too.

That is definitely minute of whitetail. I have several Lymans and I expect if you want to work on it with working various factors you can cut that group in half or less. Enjoy the powder smoke.

It was only the second time I've fired this particular rifle and I'm not finished trying different variables. This very likely will be the last range session before ML deer season which starts in 2 weeks. That and I have cataract surgery in three weeks which will hopefully make the front sight easier to see .

Well, what I didn't say was that the groups are about 3" lower that my POA. I do not like the factory front site which is black and hard to see in the dim light. Since the POI is consistent I can compensate for that. I've have ordered a silver replacement from TOW which I'll adjust more to my liking.

Food for thought?

In the past, I’ve cut a slither of those round adhesive circle price tags that you see at yard sales or flea markets to price things. They come in multi colors. Excellent for temporarily lighting up the end of a front sight in low light conditions. They peel right off if not needed?

On the other end of the coin, I’ve also used a black sharpie pen to color the backside of my front sight on extremely bright days when shooting my Muzzleloader’s with silver blades. That just wipes right off with a Qtip and a little rubbing alcohol or drop of oil.

Think you stated that you like the silver blade over the black. Of course that’s your choice and all good too!

When you install the new front sight, I’d bench it and see where your POA/POI now is? I’d not change your load combo or anything else. See where that takes you?

Maybe your POA/POI will be spot on. Maybe you’ll be low and have to file down a little on the front sight this time?

Personally, I’d much prefer my POA and POI to be spot on without worrying about Kentucky windage to get the desired result.

In a snap shot situation I’d rather point, aim fire without worrying about holding over/under to achieve the desired POI.
