Walked out from the cabin in southern Illinois to do some turkey hunting. Saw a couple flocks, but couldn't get close enough. About noon, I headed back for lunch, and spotted a flock in the woods near the cabin. I was able to keep a honeysuckle thicket between me and the birds, until I got within 30 yards. I picked out a nice young one and let the 12 gauge speak. Roast turkey tomorrow!

Lots of hills, creeks and gullies in my hunting area, as well as thick weeds, and brush for cover. Getting up close to turkeys is doable if you stay ready to shoot quick. It also helps that turkey numbers are really high right now.

Waidmannsheil! :hatsoff:

That's German speek for: Congratulations, great hunt!

Excellent!
Nice looking 12ga too...noting the 30yd target, it throws a very respectable pattern for a cylinder bore too.

The gun is a 12 gauge I finished building in August. It has a 30" full choke barrel. Weighs 5 1/2 pounds with a solid brass ramrod. Throws a good pattern at 30 yards with #6 shot. I loaded with 70 grains 2f, 1 over powder 1/8" wad, 2 1/8" wool cushion wads, 80 grain measure #6 shot, 1 over shot card.

Way to go!

Sounds like you got a lot of turkeys running around out there.

Congratulations of a nice turkey and a great stalk. I like your gun, too.

Spikebuck, just try hunting and getting your turkey with chopsticks. :rotf:
