My wife said if I bought off e-bay one more time she was taking my cell phone and credit card away. I have had very bad results from misrepresented items there.

If I cannot see the item personally, not going to buy it.

I don't buy anything off ebay, ever, whether for guns or something else. There are plenty of other sources which are more trustworthy.

From Mr. Hoyt, tou know what you are getting. I think tou'll like a .54 in a 15/16 barrel. All my Lyman .54s have a 15/16 barrel. They are slim and well ballanced. My son in law neglected his .50 T/C Hawkens. I told him to send his barrel to Mr. Hoty when he can. Let us know how your barrel turns out.

I had Bob Hoyt do a 50cal.TC barrel for me several weeks ago. I had it bored to 54 and rifled for PRB (1:60 twist w/ 11/1000ths rifling). I shot the gun on Tuesday and have it shooting 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards using Graf & Sons FFg powder and a .530 ball w/Wallyworld pillow ticking. I am very happy with the investment and hope to improve on the shooting in the next few weeks.
ps From mailing him the barrel to getting it back was exactly 2 weeks. I am really impressed w/ his knowledge and service. Jim

Do you guys know if a 15/16 .54 caliber can be bored to anything useful? I bought a Lyman GPR at a pawn shop cheap but the barrel is a sewer pipe! I had planed to replace the barrel, but reboring has its benefits.

Just snagged a TC 50 cal barrel on Ebay for $120 shipped. Seller says excellent bore and the pictures looked good. Only thing I have to transfer over to the new barrel is the rear sight from the "stinker".

Tom

Turns out the barrel from Ebay is a total POS. No rifling for at least 1.5" back from the muzzle and it's pitted. My original barrel is pristine compared to this tomato stake. It's going back to the seller and I'm getting my money back. This is the first time I've had a problem on Ebay. :cursing:

I have purchased several muzzleloaders and various accoutrements and supplies on the internet. I have also sold several items including a no longer used .54 cal ML barrel I had. Purchases and sales were from and to fellow members of forums/websites such as this one and I have had zero complaints on my end and have had zero complaints coming back to me. It is my opinion that folks on these forums have scrupples and a higher level of honesty than those who you might be dealing with on Ebay, Craigs List & etc. It is more "comforting", to me anyhow, to be somewhat familiar with those who I am selling something to or buying from on sites where I feel they might have some accountability and more reason to act in an honest manner. It is easier to misrepresent an item if neither party is familiar with the other. I will say I have never bought anything on Ebay or Craigs List so have never been burned by doing so - not that you can't get a good deal on those, or other similar sites, but it seems to be more and more "buyer beware".

Back in the old days, someone once told me to be wary of any ad in the classifieds touting something as being in "mint" condition as that usually meant it was covered in moss . . . :nono:

The T/C barrel I had bored is a 15/16th's and Mr. Hoyt took it from 50 to 54 cal. Here is his contact info:

Bob Hoyt
700 Fairfield Station Rd
Fairfield, PA 17320
Phone - 717 642 6696

If he is busy it may take a few minutes for him to answer the phone. He is a great person to do business with and I highly recommend him to anyone needing this kind of work done.
Jim

That's a nice thing about the GPR. Lyman makes a frop in barrel for both GPR and GPH in .50 and .54 caliber. Investarms (thr company that makes Lyman) use to make a Hawkens for Cabela's in .58 caliber. Not sure if it had a 15/16" barrel. Maybe a .56 caliber smooth bore? Personally, I'd keep it as a .54 GPR. A .54 will handle any game arou nd

Yes, I agree, but this one has a BAAADDD bore!I've scrubbed and scrubbed it. It has a lot of pitting. Someone let it set uncleaned for a long time! It is a 15/16 GPR in .54 already. Maybe go to a .56 smoothie?

If you hand cast (or are willing to start), perhaps you can just have it taken up a hair to some unusual caliber (like .56), and just buy a special mold for it. There's no rule that says we all have to shoot a .50, .54, .58, etc.
