I have a main spring (Rifle Shoppe) that I would like to increase the tension on(slightly). I have done this to frizzen springs by putting the bottom of the spring in my vise (heat sink) and heating the bend point and then spreading the spring. Since main springs are a different animal I was wondering if I could use the same method and not have to re temper.Another method I have heard of is to place some metal (like a finishing nail)behind the bend point.

In spite of the increased chance of breaking the spring, I have seen several original locks with a piece of brass wedged into the fold of the mainspring. I have used a brass shim, on a temporary basis, and it does work quite well.

I have used leather, wedged firmly in the v-bend. It only causes a slight increase in spring tension. I've used it long-term. I don't worry about the spring breaking as the leather will compress somewhat but you would have to decide for yourself if you wish to try this method. Good luck with whatever you decide.
