As stated by others, I also use 3F in my .50 with no problems. The bonus is you can prime with it - carrying only one type of powder. Also, it can be used in C&B revolvers.
I got a mixed order last time I bought (1 4F, 1 3F, and 1 2F). You might want to buy a mixed order so as to get more use out of the powder or if you only have the one rifle, try going with a single can of 4F (prime only), and the remainder your preferred fineness.
P.S. I "cheat" and carry a primer tube with some 4F, just in case things don't go the way I want.
