Hello everyone good afternoon and happy new year I was given a muzzleloader by my stepdad he says it’s never been fired before and I’ve been looking into shooting it. I’ve never used a muzzleloader before and haven’t really been around them much to fully get everything I have some pictures attached of the muzzleloader I’m looking for information on like model as I don’t see it on the firearm it’s self. As well as where I can find information on loading information like ball size patch size powder type to use and powder load charts or other load information thank you have a nice day

Not to be ugly but you can see the name and all the info you need on the barrel where you took the pictures . get you some black powder and .010 patches some .530 round balls a powder measure and start shooting . But most important you need a mentor to teach you

I noticed that I just don’t see a model name on the barrel and what powder type should I get

You have a quality Thompson Center Renegade in 54 caliber. Of the factory made muzzloaders this brand was considered one of the best. A good starting load would be 80g 2F powder and a .490 ball with a .10 or .15 patch. As mentioned a T/C chart should be available online. You mentioned it was unfired. That doesn't mean it wasn't loaded. Take the ramrod out and put it down the barrel until it stops. Mark it at the muzzle and then lay it against the barrel. With the mark at the muzzle the tip should come almost to the nipple. If it is further up the barrel you probably have a loaded gun.

490 ball is going to be a bit loose....

I have one just like it. The early Renegades didn't have Renegade on them. Mine likes 70 grs of 2F, a .530 ball with a .18 patch with mink oil lube. It shoots Maxi balls with 110 grs of 2F and I am using up what is left of my bore butter to lube them. I also like to put a felt wad over the powder to cut down on gas cutting the Maxi ball. Have shot a lot of deer with both loads.

If you can post some that would be great I appreciate the help
Start with a small amount of powder 40 or 50 grains. And a round ball with patch. You don't need the large kick in the shoulder to discourage you to from shooting it. You can late r increase powder when your more use to shooting BP.

There’s a Gun Club in Bergen, NY. Go over and introduce yourself. Somebody there will be able to explain what you need and how to load and shoot the muzzle loader safely. Also, search black powder clubs in that area.

Here's some 54 load info. A couple of notes: Most on here recommend using real black powder. The saboted bullets in the T/C manual are newer to ML'ing and as such are not traditional and are not discussed in this forum. The T/C Maxis are devastating on game but tough on the shoulder. I use a Lead Sled at the range
