Sharpie works great. I've pretty much switched away from oil lamp soot in favor of Sharpie mainly because it's just less messy than lamp soot. Your hands and fingers will stay much cleaner, as will your project.
My advice is to get a big fat black one. The red, green, and blue work also, but if you mess up and get it on exterior surface wood, it's a pain to clean out of the grain with acetone. Just use black, it'll blend better later on.
Paint several coats on at first letting it dry between coats, then rock on. Apply another whole coat each time you fit and tap the part.
I use a black sharpie. I use the one with a fine tip on one end because a fine tip allows me to color tight corners. I'm sure all of these suggestions work well, and all of them have pros and cons. This is an excellent forum for information and education in the art and science of rifle building.

I went to my local BP shop for some inleting black stuff. They were out. They said use a candle. Is there anything else that would work for inleting black? I can order some but it will atleast be a week or more before it arrives. Which is ok but I would rather keep moving on the project. Thanks for the help.
Get some black lipstick (orany other colour) Works the same.

I like dry erase marker- it is not a grease/oil so it wont soak/stain wood and it transfers a bit better than a Sharpie.
Wipes right off of metal and if you use a M16 style cleaning brush it brushes right out of wood for the most part.

i've used this stuff for many years...

the trick (if you call it that) is to put it sparingly and then wipe it down so that just the thinnest amount is on the part (example, a buttplate) then whack the part once against the wood and put it aside ... little black dots or streaks will tell you what is touching and what is not ... then use a file or a fine rasp to take away the wood ... i have found that a chisel takes off too much ... (don't know why this is, but it always gets me in trouble) ...

go slow ... "sneak up on it..."

the excess will smear on the wood, but a bit of sandpaper will fix this with no problem ...

works for me ...

best of luck with your build, then Make Good Smoke!!

Artist black charcoal stick markers. Easy to clean up off metal parts and transfers to wood well.

Anything that will transfer a mark will work - for me I use one of those $8 - $10 cheap small hurricane lamps without the glass chimney. I can apply soot in small amounts or turn up the flame for doing a large surface like a barrel or butt plate in no time. Each to their own methods :thumb: :ghostly::ThankYou:

Started using Permatex Prussian Blue as a tool and diemaker so naturally used it when building LRs. If used sparingly, Permatex is not messy and cleanup is easy as shown in the....a light sanding does it.....Fred

As far as Jarrows inletting black. It can clean off metal very quickly just spraying Birchwood Casy's "gun blaster". No need to even do any wiping. I hope this helps.
