Is T/C Hawken worth the premium?

I own several T/Cs and a Lyman Great Plains Rifle. I love the T/Cs and they are among my favorite guns.

As far as the price difference goes, the Lyman guns are accurate, durable and rugged. They're easily as well built as the T/C guns. If I had to choose one based on price, it would definately be Lyman.

Investarm makes the guns for Lyman, so you also have the Investarm Hawken to consider. I own one of those also, and I really like it.

I prefer the Great Plains just because it is closer in appearance to the originals, I have had several TC's and they are good guns but do not fit me as well the LGP, and if you want to shoot modern bullets and pretend you are traditional hunting you can get a bullet barrel for the Lyman.

I've had both T/C and Lyman and both are worth the money. I don't know where your getting your prices.. the difference seems Out of line. Anyway what ever you choose keep in mind it ain't no stinkin Inline :barf: Good Luck SS

A friend of mine bought a TC Hawken flintlock about 3 mounths ago new price $660. I own both GPR & TC Hawkens.I think the TC's fit me better and are more comfortable to shoot than the GPR. Both guns are very accuate . As for the price difference of around $200 I had rather spend a few extra bucks and have a rifle that fits me better. As for the looks I've seen a few TC'c that looked mighty fine they don't all have to stay blued & brass. And I like the grain of the TC's wood better than that on my GPR. It's is a very hard choice to make ,So I say look around take your time ,find a deal on a good used rifle ,then buy both that way you will have around $700 in two rifles a TC & a GPR  :rotf:

Keep in mind that when it comes to TC or Lyman, it is a bit of a Ford - Chevy argument. TC makes a first rate caplock gun. Their flinters had all manner of problems, but I think the new flint locks may have cured many of those. I've had TC's and Lyman's The Lyman GPR fits my long arms slightly better than the tc Hawken. I also think the butt stock shape of the Lyman is a bit better for drop and pull. See if some body in your area can let you have and shoot both guns before you actually part with hard earned funds.

my vote is for the tc hawken. quality usa product. had a trade rifle that i bought new. it had ignition problems but was accurate when it did go off. maybe it was a lemon, i don't know. never had a gpr so can't comment on it. prices are way down on the auction sites.200-300 for a good used tc.

I'm a big believer in T/C products, but if you are only considering brand new guns I don't think any production model is the best value.

For a couple hundred more you can get a TVM or similar rifle, even better quality and certainly better resale value.

Good luck with it, whatever you decide.

There is a NIB T/C 50 hawkens at my loacl gun store. He wants 350.00 for it. I know it has the older rear sight on it so it may not have the new QLA barrel.

I have had both, but kept the Lyman GPR.It fit me better and for some reason I never could get any accuracy out of the Hawken, even when they put a new barrel on it. Bought the GPR and it was a shooter from the 1st shot. Others, have had different experiences. If that means anything.

The T/C Hawken is a fine rifle made in the USA with a lifetime warranty. However, for looks, fit, and shootability with traditional patched roundball I would take the Lyman GPR. The Lyman Trade Rifle is as close to a T/C Hawken as you will find and they are great shooters. I have all of the rifles mentioned but by far prefer my GPR's.

Ill "DITTO" here...I bought a T/C Hawken, then a Renegade then two...ALL because the company IS 1st rate and the warranty can NOT be beat. Eventually though I ended up with a Lyman GPR. now THAT is a shooter!! Fits better mostly. IF you can shoulder them both and then buy the one that fits YOU. THAT one will be worth every penny.

Food for thought: why does T/C need a lifetime warranty? My first GPR is about 30 years old and never had a problem. Does that justify the high price of the T/C? T/C offers only .50 cal. percussion. With the GPR, you have a choice between .50 or .54 cal. and between percussion and flint. If you check the auction sites T/Cs are going for 1/3 to 1/2 of a new price. GPRs are going for 3/4 to almost full price. Don't get me wrong, I like my .54 T/C Hawkens. I paid $200 for it used and it's worth every penny. I love my .54 GPRs. I bought both of them new.

Traditional rifles are out of style with most people now days. The good news is you can find a real nice TC Hawken used and in great condition at a price you can afford if you are willing to look around. Because these rifles are not hot sellers in the gun shops if you take the time to look around you can often find a shop more than happy to move one just to get it out the door. I have never bought a used TC that was not a wonderful shooter. Plus TC will fix anything that needs fixing normally for free . TC just sent me a new Seneca/Cherokee bead front sight for free. I was looking for a bead front sight and a peep rear and they only had the front sight.
I offered to pay for it, but they just offered to send me one.
