finally pulled the trigger,way back in nov. i asked about sitting fox and got a firestorm started i was looking for a component set of good quality. well i will get it this week i ordered the issac haines set from jim chambers and im chomping at the bit.i must say i was going to use knob mountain,went down there only 1 hour from me, dave keck,owner is a very nice and gracious person,but he didnt have a component set on hand and said to call chambers and tell them he said to call.needless to say they had what i wanted,so her i go :grin:

Chamber's kits are the berries. However, sometimes the barrel is set a hair too far forward. If you don't catch this early and slip the barrel to the rear a little bit, it costs you later when you have to fiddle with a flash hole that can't be where it must be. Double and triple check the lock and barrel location before inletting the flared breechplug tang, and the rest is pure fun. Location of flash hole needs to determine the location of the lock, not the other way around.

Well, now that your project is underway what are you gonna build "next" - if you already have an idea you have caught the bug to which there is "no cure".

Location of flash hole needs to determine the location of the lock, not the other way around.

Most likely the lock is Preinlet. Thus location of the Lock determines the location of the Barrel (flashhole). You cannot move the lock inlet, but you can back the barrel up to accommodate the vent/pan positioning.

My suggestion is to inlet the Lock First 90% of the way, then inlet the barrel to get the vent hole in proper position according to the flashpan center. Normally you will have to move the barrel back a little.

I got my Chambers Isaac Haines kit a couple of weeks ago...well the Rice 38" 54 caliber swamped barrel came back in November. Definitely a top-notch kit. While I do have to square up the tang area just a little, this is the first kit I have had where the barrel just tightly "snap" fit into the inlet perfectly right out of the box. My stock is a piece of hard maple with very tight 100% curl. H7 is the grade, I believe. All parts appear to be very top notch. My first Chambers kit, but it won't be my last!

The stock is currently sitting with the barrel in it for at least 45 days to completely acclimate. Besides, I'm in the middle of a Flint Fullstock Hawken build right now anyway.

Please post up a few pictures of the kit showing the fit an finish. I've never seen a picture of these kits from Jim Chambers or Tip Curtis that folks get. How well are the lock and triggers inletted?. Grade 7 curl that must be a sight to behold! :thumbsup: Edit, And some pictures of that fullstock Hawken would be nice also.

spike i envy you i wanted a 54 but they didnt have the barrel in stock at the time so i went with the 50 only 4 ozs diff in wght. good luck with build my friend :hatsoff:

I had the same problem. No 54s. Ordered mine weeks ago. Still waiting for the brown truck. :idunno:

I just picked up a 38 in swamped Rice in a 54 c weight, last week for $175. Jason from Rice was having a sale and posted it on ALR, and couldn't turn it down. Let me tell ya those barrels didn't last long at those prices. I wasn't even looking for parts on a next build, as I'm just now starting a new build...but dang I had to pull the trigger.
