Those are Japanese matchlocks known as teppō or tanegashima. The Japanese favored a snapping matchlock design based off a Malaccan design called an istinggar that the Portuguese brought from their colony in the Malay archipelago. Read "Tanegashima-The Arrival of Europe in Japan" by Olof G. Lidin for some good info on them!Thought someone may find this photo interesting. My daughter is in Venice at a museum and sent me this. They look like wheel locks mostly, I think?
Wow, awesome information. Now that you say Japanese, I can see that. I'd love to see a lock like that actually fire. I have some research to do.
