same here in Tampa, ive heard that it has to do with the patriot act and the plastic tags they now want in ALL explosives. thus making it a pain to produce and causing a delay in its availibility. and the fact a lot of sellers don't want the hasle of stocking the powder. my local WM even stopped selling pyrodex. now the only place i can get podwer is mail order. at a GREATLY increased cost i mite ad. You can't find black powder at any gun store in Oklahoma City! :(

IMO, the best way to buy it is mail order by the case...25cans of Goex delivered to my door for $10.25/Lb, cans of different granulations mixed anyway you want...there's a Goex distributor right over the state line in MO...

Living in central Ohio, I don't know of anywhere
that sells blackpowder but most outlets including
Wal-Mart still have pyrodex available.
I must take exception to your statement about
mail order blackpowder. I get my blackpowder from
www.grafs.com, sure I pay the $20 Haz-Mat fee,
but if you get a couple other guys togethet and
split an order you will find that you can still
get Goex for under $15 a pound.
I was told by one local gun dealer that it was not that they did'nt want to have it available
but the paper work and storage restrictions made
it unprofitable to the point they would have
to charge $22/$23 dollars a pound for Goex just
to brake even. That being the case I don't blame
the dealers, they don't make no money and they don't want to gouge their customers. :hmm:
snake-eyes :(

Bavarialand - Believe there is a camping-kayaking-hunting store around St. Pete or Clearwater that sells Goex. I can't remember the name, but someone on the 'Forum posted a link awhile back.

TOTW will ship GOEX for $12.02 a pound in 25 lb. lots and that includes the Haz-Mat fee. You can mix granulations and UPS will deliver it right to your doorstep. Get a gruop of shooters to split a case and you can keep costs down.

I wonder if that is still the price? My local supplier just had a price increase. It went from $12.50 a lb to $15.
Dunno...that was a year ago...but if there's been a price increase, ordering direct from a Goex distributor will still be cheaper than from TOW of other dealers

Wonder if that has anything to do with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing... :hmm:

Don't know if this will help, but here is a quick list of gun shops in your area, maybe one will be brave enough to still sell black powder...

The local gunshop (real one) gets inspected to death by the fire marshall. Really cuts into how much of any powder and primer that they can carry.

My next buy will be a bulk order if I can get someone to go in.

Since you got the lists attention, you ought to ask anyone near to you pm you to do a group buy.

Clutch

I'm in Norman and running a little low on powder. I can split a case with you if you can use that much.

I buy mine from Log Cabin Supply,15.00 lp the last I bought. I think it was right before deer season. They have to store it out back in a magazine. Dilly

Thats the real problem..we had a gun shop here owned and run by some local police and ATF tryed to run them ragged counting every other week, after they had closed everyone else, the only way they got them closed was they lost the lease. :rotf: fred :hatsoff:

Sorry, but I don't understand why 777 and Pyrodex are readily available and Goex, etc., are not. I can get Goex from Cabelas here but its $17.00 a lb. and it takes about 30 minutes to do the paperwork, whereas I can just pick up a lb. of the other stuff and take it to the checkout.

The new Black Powder replacements have a much higher ignition point and are classified closer to smokeless because of it.
That changes the transportation requirements and reduces the insurance and red tape envolved in storing large quantities.
It also changes the hoops the gun store has to jump thru in order to sell it to the public.

The gun shop near where I live , stopped selling black powder over a year ago , because of the new regulations . Now I have to travel about 15 miles , and pay around $18.00 a LB. , and I wonder how much longer they will be selling it . In my state (Maryland) , you can't have more than 5 LBS. of black powder unless you have a special permit (and all the BS that comes along with it) . I'm reluctant to order even 5 LBS. , since I'm afriad of the authorities kicking down my door at 3 AM :shocked2: . I can see the headline in the paper : CACHE OF BLACK POWDER FOUND IN RAID , DANGEROUS WEAPONS ALSO FOUND . Makes me wonder how much longer we will be able to buy any amount of black powder without having to have some kind of permit . I don't think black powder is anymore dangerous than gasoline or LP gas , and we can get all the gasoline and LP gas we want without having to have a special permit to do so .

Same with fertilizer and kerosene...blackpowder hasn't been used in any terriroist activity to my knowledge.

And isn't it disgusting to see that our country/society has reached the poiint where law-abiding tax-paying citizens would even have the thought come to mind of authorities breaking down our doors at 3:00am...I've had similar thoughts, and the way news outlets pervert reality, I can see the same headlines.

Shooting trap, skeet, and action pistol for 20 years, with all the subsequent reloading that goes with it in .410/.28/.20/.12 gauges, .45ACP, etc....you can probably guess how many GI ammo cnas of reloaded shells I have stracked up for each of the various gauges/calibers...never hurt a fly in my lifetime of course but the news media wouldn't make that the headline
