looking at a fowler, does he sign the barrel or just the lock.

thanks
kurt

Can't say for sure. There are 3 "Brooks" gunsmiths that I know that are contemporary builders. Jack Brooks, Mike Brooks, and John Brooks. There was also a John Brooks way back in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

kurt, it depends on the type of gun that Jack is building. He usually marks the gun in the manner and location that is appropriate to the builder/school/pattern.

I have three of Jack's guns--a Type G trade gun and Deringer and Leman trade rifles.

On the Type G trade gun, he has engraved "LONDON" on the top flat and stamped proof and view marks on the left oblique flat on either side of his makers mark.

As British gun makers typically put their name on the lock plate, Jack engraved his name there.

Jack stamped the Deringer trade rifle in the manner of original Deringer rifles with his name on the top flat of the barrel and on the lock plate.

On my Jack Brooks' Leman, Jack stamped his name on the top flat.

He made castings of parts from an original Leman rifle in a local private collection, including the lock. Leman's stamp is preserved on the lock plate as well as the stamped or rolled engraving.

+1 .......So many nice old BP burners out there, but so little time, and even less money. Oh well.

thanks, looked at a trade gun with no name on barrel just lock, wasn't sure it was a BROOKS gun or not.
