Basic shaping and beginning moldings are done on the buttstock and lock area of the yeager that I am building. Time for the forestock. The plans that my friend originally had for it shows a "schnable" front end instead of a nose cap. Photos and drawings don't always inpart the third dimension!

Does the stock flare horizontally as well as the vertical directions? Any photos looking up and down at one?

A classic Schnabel flares in both directions. That being said, the only examples I've seen were on modern rifles, and on the Traditions 'Pioneer' caplock rifle, which also has a pistol grip and doesn't replicate anything pre 1840.

18th century German rifles will sometimes have a "Schnabel" fore end...WITH a horn nosecap! Yes, it will flare SOME on the sides...not nearly as much as you might think, though. Give me a bit, and maybe I can come up with some good, useful photos...

Most German guns seem to have nosecaps of the normal variety.

Thanks-

The Pistor plans I have seem to show no nosecap, just a carved wooden schnabel. I will hold off a few days to see your pictures. I will spend the time cleaning the shop area and looking for a chunk of horn that I just know is hiding out there! :hatsoff:

I bought the jeager book that's just out of germany @ $140. All of the guns that have horn nose caps in this book have a schnabeled cap. It's actually more of a raised and rolled edge along the front edge of the cap that goes along the whole piece. Kind of hard to explain.... :hmm:

The Pistor military rifle has a plain brass nosecap with a little "tail" that runs a short distance back on the bottom. It is screwed into a stud dovetailed on the bottom of the barrel.

The schnabel is not a huge thing like you see on some modern rifles, but is rather more subtle. I still haven't gone through my books to see if I could come up with a couple of photos where you could really see what was going on....
