I have a 50cal JBMR that i had bored out to 58 as i too thought the gun was a trifle too heavy. With the 58 barrel it is far more manageable, and really shoots. I like the single set trigger, especially for hunting with cold fingers with gloves on. there is more room in the trigger guard.

so thanks for the reply and a question for ya ...

did the weight even out better with the meat removed from the 50 to make it a 58?

also did you leave the barrel the same length? and lastly ...

who did the freshening to the barrel and at what twist rate? ... cost?

finally ... how does it shoot now?

The reduction in weight made the gun far more comfortable to carry in the woods. I left the barrel the same length at the 30" it came with. Bobby Hoyt did the reboring and coning of the muzzle. I went with a 1:66 deep cut twist as I only shoot round balls. I've taken it to the range only once so far. Haven't found its favorite load yet, but groups are acceptable at 75 yds with 90 Grns of FFG. I know the gun can shoot better, so I am still working on fine tuning the load chain.

F.G. Ford: Would love to discuss the hickory rod with you. Is there any way to message members on here?

Any good gunsmith can easily make you a mainspring.
I have made many hickory rods with a table saw and a radius shaped scraper for any caliber.
You do not need fancy tools, just a little patience.
These rod work very well and won't break if used with common sense.
On any of my guns I much prefer a hand made ram rod. It does express to the concerning observer, that the owner of this gun does care that his whole character is made with perseverance.

oh and another thing ... my barrel plug unscrewed with just a little special help so I guess it aint [er wernt] silver soldered.
bigted: Really, the breech plug came out without unseemly difficulty?? What sort of tools and wrenches did you use? No sign of silver soldering?

Cantom, I use an action wrench in my vise to hold the barrel and a barrel wrench from midway to grasp the plug. It unscrewed with little resistance so I concluded that no silver solder had been used on the threads as has been asked and mentioned above.

Srry for the length of time for this answer. Been a bit distracted.
