Way to go! As for backing out when not sure on the hog, remember, you didn't retreat - you simply advanced to the rear! :v

Excellent story and photo, thanks for sharing.

rabbit03 (by the way, when is that BBQ )??

Oh, I want to know one other vital piece of information. Is your office hiring?? I am available!

If you could have somehow shrunk the image of your rifle laying there against that hog, you would have had another Hogzilla story going!! Tom

Yeah if I had my old Mac and Photo Shop that shrunkced down ML on top of the humungous boar would be a real talking piece :rotf:

yeah, 2158 pound boar taken with home made muzzleloader. ...Bore the size on an elephant attacks man with muzzle loader... man and ML win.

Not my best work...

Excellent!! :rotf: I wish I knew how to do that. I'm going to send this picture to my friends. Just so you know RC I'm going to send it to both of them.

Not too small at all. Just right. This boar has to be over 1000 pounds. That will get someone's attention.

If that's a 1,000 pound boar then the truck that made them tracks by it must be HUGE.

HD

yes. I think the tracks need to be photoshopped out. That is the only thing 'wrong with the photoshop creation of the next 1000 pounder pig!'

I do like the ratio of the gun to the pig though, that is outrageous!

Congrats! Nice story and pic. It seems like your .50 rifle is plenty big enuf. I'm curious iffin that .50 r/b went all the way through. Most of my c/f shots at hogs don't penetrate the other side. GW

I meant to elaborate on the .50 penetration earlier. As a matter of fact I thought the penetration was very poor and that was perhaps more my reason for thinking maybe I would go with a heavier projectile next time. I should have elaborated more in the orignal post but I thought I was getting long winded as it was.

These animals are extremely solid to say the least. Not only did the ball not penetrate to the other side it barely made it past half way. Added to the fact that I hit him high and I'm sure that's why he got as far as he did. Now gettin to the middle is enough to bugger up enough plumbing on most any critter but an inch or two less penetration and that old hog could have lived for hours insted of minutes. Of course the distance was a factor also. 75 yards may be on the far edge for shooing big boars with a .50 roundball although like you say I've yet to have through and through penetration even with a 30-06 except on smaller hogs.

Of course if I see another one tomorrow in the same circumstances I would use the same rifle however I still think if I come out here just to hunt hogs I would likely bring something that throws a heavier projectile.

Mountain--I have a buddy in BC that shoots big massive animals with round ball. He casts his own and uses wheel weights for 'lead'. And he also hardens them with a heat treatment in the oven and a water quench. He contends they penetrate much better than straight soft lead with NO heat treatment. I tend to agree with him. So, I guess in short I would vote for hardening your round balls to get the improved penetration you'd like. He has taken many Moose and big bear with hardened round ball with full penetration.

...Just another option to carefuly weigh here.
And thanks again for a great story and post!
