Just got my barrel back from Mr. Hoyt. Its a .54 now and I left Rifling and twist up to him. It was a Renegade .50. It is now a 1:66 twist he also cut a rear sight dovetail for me so I can mount a more traditional sight to it. Right now I am remodeling kitchen and living room but when that is done I plan on getting it together in a couple months when work is done and mamma wont kill me. LOL Also got a new set of new RE Davis triggers for it and L&R Flintlock lock. Hopefully she will shoot round balls well. Eventually want to get a more traditional stock for it. So the only T/C left will be the writing on the barrel.

That is a lot of money to put into a TC.

I bought a NOS Renegade barrel for $90, I found a beatup stock with the buttplate and triggers for $60, I had about $30 in an under rib and thimbles off ebay, installed an L&R RPL lock, after shipping it back twice to fix the flaws I had $220 in it, I had some TC sights, I probably had another $15 in a ramrod and fittings.

So, I had $415 and three weeks work in the gun and got $400 for it when I sold it.

It came out nice but I wouldn't do it again.

Not doing if for the money Eric doing it for the fun of it and to have a very good hunting rifle. The T/C Trigger broke so I upgraded for about the same money as a used set of T/C Triggers off of EBAY. The Lock someone had Jerry Rigged and did not work right. So I upgraded that. LOL Had 100.00 dollars in the gun prior to updating. I upgraded the barrel to .54 since I already have a .54 percussion with a Fox Ridge barrel. So 100.00 for gun 55.00 for trigger 200.00 or so for lock and 125.00 for barrel. So about @475.00 for a all custom component hunting gun. Don't plan on selling it plan on killing deer with it. You cant buy a gun with all those upgrades for 475.00 and I doubt a factory gun will shoot as well with a good shooter. (Not me) I am a deer hunter not a gun looker. By that I mean I will use the gun and not worry if it has a scratch or dent in it and wont cry cause I just scratched my 3K gun.
I use to like muscle cars. You can think of it as a sleeper, just looks like a Renegade but shots like a custom. (I hope)

I'm on the verge of doing something similar with a Renegade. I bought it as a 50 and it was new in the box. I shot it 30 or so shots and was not impressed. The stock is the late style with drop meant to be a compromise between iron sights and a scope.

So, had hoyt make the 50 into a 58 and if i like the way it shoots ill sell the renegade stock and restock it with a Pecatonica. The plastic butt plate will be replaced by an iron mild crescent. The trigger is a goo single so that will be fine for hunting. Probably do something different with the sights.

I don't regret the cost of these projects. It will be a good hunting rifle for kids a d grandkids long after I'm gone! :)

Longcruise. just curious as I have 5 renegades in different configurations and calibers but I have never seen a Renegade in the late style with a different drop and plastic butt plate. Do you have a picture two.....I am a fan of them and like I said just curious.

Sounds like my marketing skills that seem to go something like"buy high and sell low" and get on to to the next one! Make it ,sight it in, shoot it a bit and make another. Pretty soon the gun safe is bulging, the corners are full , their sticking out from under the bed and the work bench is so covered with stood up guns you can't find your tools. I think they're messing around at night after the lights in the shop go out and having twins on me or something. Worse than rabbits I tell yah!

I will take a few of those breeders off your hands. LOL

I made the TC between a Beck (sorta') and fowler plank build and a Tn rifle from a precarve. I put together a Kibler SMR and thought I was done with TCs until my brother found a kit he gave my dad 30+ years ago that had never been touched, now I have another.

TCs aren't bad, most of us started out with one so they have a place in our heart.

Bucky,
Nothing wrong with a TC. What you have done has made it more to your liking without the cost of a custom. If you're happy that's all that matters.

Bucky 182 How long did it take for Robert hoyt, do the work? I sent him a barrel two weeks ago, to make into a smoothie. Just wondering how long of a wait? Thanks.

I'll take one tomorrow and put it up for you.

Well, you know your renegades. It is not plastic, it is metal.

In my defense, i have done very little with this rifle since acquiring it. I sighted it in with some maxi balls last August for a grandson to shoot during deer season. I also shot some balls with it and was not impressed. The sights are fiber optics that i put on cause the kids like them.

I no longer have much use for 50 cal since Colorado no longer allows them for elk with a round ball. So, i sent my tc Hawken 50, this renegade 50 and a sewer pipe 1" Hawken to hoyt. Had the tc 50 bored to 54 and the other two are now 58.

I will probably give the 1" Hawken to the grandkids since it drops right in to a renegade. If the other 58 shoots like hoyts 54 bore, I'll get the pecatonica stock and sell the stock in the pictures.
