I made this for an upcoming blanket shoot at the local longrifle club. The compass is 2" dia. I turned the box from Chestnut.

Those of you who have worked with Chestnut will know that it's splintery, full of holes and breaks easily (that's the second lid I made). Not suitable for carving or really fine detail, but has a beautiful color and interesting texture.

I am afraid that I'm gonna run out of words describing how nice your work is if you keep this up:haha: :hatsoff:

:hatsoff: Just where is this shoot. I would shoot for that lol. Nice work. It's crafts like this that make this so great fun. You Sir a real craftsman thanks for posting.

One of the fellows in the longrifle club has some old chestnut barn wood and gave me some nice scrap pieces. Plenty big and thick enough for what I do.

You sure did them justice. :hatsoff:

An old friend gave me a couple of chestnut items he made up - a frame for a poem his daughter had written about a night out with both families at a local Irish pub; and a stick to settle disagreements between me and the wife - we each grab the end with our name carved in it, and pull. Her end has a slight flare out, and my end has a decided taper down! I just never seem to win. :idunno: :haha:

I admire folks with the talent to take something beautiful, and make it even more so. :hatsoff:
