I just ordered a 54cal smoothbore barrel for my reneagade from W.E. Rayl does any body have a recommended load, for shot and patched round ball?

How can I get in touch with him to order one? Is it a GM drop in, or does he make them up?
Thanks

No set standards when it comes to patch and powder charge, different guns like different loads. I would start with 45grns of 2 or 3f and work up in increments from there. Sometimes 1 or 2 grns can make a difference. Patch wise I usually have several pieces at a different thickness. Personally I do not like a real tight patch and never use a short start, but thats me and theres nothing wrong with a real tight patch either. With lots of 3 shot groups you will soon figure it out. Remember you don't need alot of powder to kill paper.

Roy, I like what you said. Often, folks forget the basic premise [for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction]. Newton's law is still in effect and paper don't weigh that much and it don't have a will to live, either. Hunters and gun toters and idiots often forget that there is a living, breathing, happy, creature on the other end of the muzzle that would like to see the sun go down. Thanks, Roy for reminding us all that killing should not be experimental at this point in the evolution of man and firearms. Bullet placement is half of the equation and energy displacement is the other half. An ethical hunter doesn't skimp on either half of the formula. :v

Wow, I said all that!? :) Thanks

I was thinking that too many times when at a range theres always someone there shooting and their gun and it sounds like a cannon. And its because their using 100+ grns of powder saying "thats what it likes". They are there to shoot targets nothing more. A gun will function at different distances with different powder charges. For instance I use 45 grains of 3F in my fifty for shots up to 50yds. Past 50 it likes 65 grains. I have made some real long shots with this gun with only 65 grains. I understand wanting to up the charge for "hunting loads" and practicing with a hunting load, but if you are basically only shooting clangers and paper why waste the powder?

Slippyfoote, I kinda sorta agree, except I think shot placement is nearer 100%. The .22 short has taken every critter in North America with perfect shot placement. More power only gives one more options as to acceptable placement. :v
