I like and shoot both smooth and rifled, but not a great fan of the 58 cal. for an everyday shooter. If I was hunting elk, bear, moose, etc. then 58 might be a wise option, but personally the .50 is my favorite. Ammo, ie. balls are a bit cheaper, easier to work up light loads, 30 - 35 grains 3f at aprox. 30 yards will just about duplicate a full charge of say 90 grains at 100 - 150 yards. Back in the day our club used this light load at our shoots and none of us had to change our sights from what we used for hunting. That load with a spit soaked patched ball and I could shoot all day long without having to clean the bore.

Go for a smooth rifle and you will never be disappointed. One Gun to rule them all. My smoothie is a fifty and its the Best gun for anything. And at BP rifle range its Damn accurate

I have one ordered in .50. The biggest thing I would use it on is Texas deer or hog. I have shot a lot in my life and don’t like too much recoil. I also like guns on the heavy side of shooting offhand.
if I don’t like it or feel the caliber inadequate, I will order another one.
I built a .54 Colonial for a friend recently. It was about 3 ounces lighter but felt like 3 pounds. I ordered the Woodsrunner for myself.
sometimes guns are built around the cartridge. The Peacemaker feels heavy with in .38 special. I think the Colonial was built around at least a .54

Both of my .58’s (rifle & smooth) came in at 8 lbs 10 oz with cleaning supplies in the patchbox
