I see that Kibler has on their site and tall rear site and a rear standard site.. Why would you use a tall rear site... Sorry for my question.. still new to the BP / flintlock world

Just my opinion......

The normal sight is pretty much just for the folks that build a rifle just for looking at. They are really close to the barrel which causes problems once the barrel gets hot. The tall sight works much better for the folks that do a lot of shooting

With the original front sight, most shot about 8 inches low at 50 yards, Jim came out with a taller rear sight to remedy this. I left mine alone, just filed down the front sight so it hits about an inch high at 50 yards.

I started with the stock sights, after finding my best load and filing down the front sight to align POI with POA I had only a small nubbin of a front sight left.

Now admittedly a lot of original long rifles have very small front sights, but my old eyes struggled with it so I replaced them both with the taller sights and started over, could not be happier with the result.

I also put taller sights on my Colonial. Pretty much had nothing left of the front blade with stock rear to get POI where I wanted it. I prefer a higher sighting line to get my bony cheek off the comb a little bit.

I changed out the sights on my SMR for taller front and rear sights. Not from Kibler (not available at that time). But gives more to work with for elevation adjustment, in my experience.

The low sights are for the HC crowd. Most who shoot in competition will use higher sights to deal with the distortion when the barrel heats up. Personally I like the taller sight as others pointed out. Easier to adjust, with some practice you can use the taller front sight to adjust POA for different ranges and gets my cheek up off the comb.

For me it had to do with being able to see the sights in the dark woods. A little fine nubbin on the end of the barrel is impossible to find. My rear sight is taller with a wider notch. The front sight is wider and taller too.

The closer the sights are to the barrel, the faster mirage will begin to distort your sight picture as the barrel heats up.
So on a multiple shot woodswalk match, a taller sight will usually give you an "edge". Unless you're trying to participate in novelty events, like splitting horizontal playing cards, etc... you'll want be as close to the bore as possible for such precise work.

A tall(er) sight is more likely to be damaged, especially on a hunt trip. And we're seldom lucky/unlucky enough to heat up a barrel from multiple shots on hunt. Sure sucks to look down while on the hunt of a lifetime and see a sight all bashed, bent or missing..lol

The short sights have served me just about perfectly on my Colonials.

Concur, just shot my .45 Woodsrunner today for the first time with the stock sight.
50 GR 3F .445 ball and .018 patch 3" low at 50 yards. Tall sight ordered tonight. Very sweet gun to shoot. My .54 Woodsrunner has the tall sight and shoots 1" high at 50 yards Which is perfect for hunting.

Never even shot my 50 cal Woodsrunner with stock sights. After reading here before this thread about the Woodsrunners shooting low I ordered the taller site and installed it. Mine shoots point of aim at 50 yards. never touched the front sight

The taller sight is only .074 taller… thats not much. It will not get caught up in the brush, we are not talking about a tang mounted peep .
Mine is ordered for a woodsrunner. Hitting way too low at 50 didn’t even try out at 100 yards.

Wondering if any of you with a Kibler SMR found putting a taller sight on helped as have the reports on the WoodsRunner and Colonial? I see Kibler has a sight for sale on their website slated for a SMR but believe it the same sight offered with the kit. The taller sights for the other two rifles are slated for a wider barrel flat. Plan on getting started on my SMR that I've had for awhile and if a taller sight helps overall, see no sense in fitting/finishing the one sent with the kit just to redo a taller one. Have to call Kibler and check it out, see Track has variety of sights that would probably be a possibility.

T/W Bree at Kiblers this afternoon. She advised that they possibly plan on offering a higher rear sight for the SMR someday but when customers who inquire about one they refer them to Track of Wolf. Wolf does have a pretty good selection of rear sights of various dimensions and styles. Have read of several accounts on this forum in the past where SMR shooters have installed one from Track. Still interested in any SMR shooters who have done so on the results and what worked best. Have to try a search and try and find those posts.
