There will always be a market for a custom builder, Jim Chambers and Jim Kibler's are both very, very nice guns, but if you have someone who really knows his stuff on these guns, and have the money, they would probably go custom...
The option of the carved WoodsRunner is fantastic, but, if you go look at originals from that time frame, it is a fantasy gun...You can buy one, finish it, put it over your fireplace and when the relatives come for Christmas they will congratulate you on your work...But, hand that to someone who has studied these guns for decades and they will know it doesn't follow any school or time period...I'm not slamming Jim Kibler, I may order one for myself as I am finishing up my WoodsRunner as well...I'm also challenged with carving wood...I took a week long class at Montgomery Community College for a NMLRA class on carving a few years back...I can work with filing metal, I made a flintlock back in the '80s and it turned out ok, is a great deer killer...But, a man has to know his limitations...I'm not good at relief carving, I can do some simple incise carving but that is about it...I can't wait to get mine to the range and see how she shoots, compared with my other .54...It will be in my hands this deer season as my other one weighs in at 10 pounds...What Jim has done with the WoodsRunner is put together a very nice, reliable and historically accurate flintlock that someone with some wood working/finishing experience can put together and shoot...It's a much better option than the cheap, manufactured guns put out by other manufactures...I would guess this would be in the semi custom market as you can dress it up as you want...Everyone enjoy the 4th and stay safe!
