a few pics of the primitive knife and hawk tournament we went to in East Texas over the weekend. My son Milo, took 2nd place in youth; I took 2nd in archery and first in intermediate throwers. one of the prizes i won was a very nice Lewis and Clark reproduction tomahawk.

Congrats to both of you!
The first pic with the knife in mid-air is pretty neat. :applause:

Great pics looks like everyone had fun. OK I gotta ask, last pic, back row, second guy from the left. What happened to the rest of his Tomahawk handle? :haha: :haha:

in the primitive throwing tournaments, there are no restrictions on handle lengths. tomahawks with short hadles throw just like your knife...same distanaces for one and two turns. All the old timers have handles that are only 6-9 inches long, only the newbies have full length handles on thier hawks and at one turn, they are standing 2-4 feet further away from the targets!

It would appear that the "newbies" are more accurately recreating the history of the Rendezvous, not just trying to get closer to the target.

Well after their first tournament, the newbies come back with 9" handles on their hawks. it's all about adapting to the game...the closer you can get to the target to get your one turn, the more likely you are to hit your target. it's all fun, but it's still a competition with lots of cool stuff and money up for grabs.

Congratulations to you and your son!

Great pics, looks like you guys had a lot if fun!

Looks like a great outing. Is that the L+C hawk in the next to last photo?

It'd be more like 2-4 paces.

At the Nationals in Friendship in 1980, a fella with one of them cut down sissy hawks took 1st place beating me by a hair. I beat him and took 1st with the knife, he couldn't cheat with the knife. :nono: :shake:

 I agree there should be a minimun length to the hawk handles. Over the last five years they just keep getting shorter & shorter. I was at a throw last mo and this tall fellow (6"-5")with ape like arms was throwing about 1/2 the distance the rest of us were. :shake: He won with his 6" handle - I agree with other post - cheaters. We are going to change the throw in the future and all folks (puss--s)throwing hawks with handles less than 16" will have to throw with the women & chilren. Strawstalker, NM Teritories
