Friend of mine at the Range recommended Kroil to me as cleaner/preservative. Don't know much about it; any opinions out there?

E

it is all I use on my beanch rest rifles and on my 1000yard rifle it works good on m-4s but have never used it in my black powder guns, just rendered bear fat and ox yoke wounder lube and dawn dish soap with warm water

IMHO it is the best penetrating oil for freeing up rusted assemblies that was ever made. But I have never used it as a rust prevenative. I think it would "run off" What I use as a preventive is the Spray On anti rust spray which we used a lot in industry and is available from most industrial supply companies. Being petrolium based I think kroil would lead to fouling in a ml :hmm:

i use kroil on my old hit miss engines freeing up stuck/rusted parts
i used it lubeing my locks a few times but have since gone back to rem-oil
kroil is a little pricey but if you got a sticky lock kroil will fix it right up

I have used Kroil to wipe down barrels and the rest of the gun after cleaning with BP solvent for about 5 years with no problems. I started out using it in BPCR and moved on to ML. It also helps loosen any lead fouling in the barrel.

Thanx Guys - Interesting, & worth getting some to check it out...

Eric

I used kroil for years , but now I been using fluid film for the last 8 months and I tell you what , its the best stuff. I use it on my muzzle loaders inside and out , no rust yet its the best stuff .

I looked up Fluid Film on the web, Griz. Apparently it's Lanolin based. Sounds interesting...

One thing you'll notice with Kroil- it's got a sharp smell that persists. It's not "dirty shorts" like Ballistol, but it hangs in there and it's noticeable. If you're using it for a hunting gun, I'd be extra careful about the breezes, cuzz even with my bent sniffer I can pick it up from a fair distance.

OK here's another one of those abbreviations BCPR what the heck is it. Doesnt anyone know how to spell complete words anymore? Frank

Hi Frank. BPCR= black powder cartridge rifle. Much more convenient to just use the initials!

FRJ, FYI I feel your pain! As a substitute teacher I hve a hard time understanding the students of today. FWIW I believe it has to do with the texting that is so common. I am still using smoke signals my self. :hmm: Sincerly , Two puffs of smoke . :surrender:

My wifeangel uses those abbreviations all the time, that she picks up at work. Drives me crazy.

Kroil is a very powerful penetrating oil. I use it sparingly to release very stuck old screws. That's its purpose in life. It is not a mild chemical, and you should read the MSDS before thinking about using it instead of regular gun oil.

EYE: BURNING AND IRRITATION. SKIN: DRYNESS,
PROLONGED EXPOSURE MAY CAUSE DERMATITIS. INHAL: MAY CAUSE HEADACHE, DIZZINESS, ANESTHESIA, NAUSEA AND UPPER RESPIRATORY IRRITATION. INGEST: MAY
CAUSE LUNG IRRITATION, NAUSEA, VOMITING AND DIARRHEA. HARMFUL OR FATAL IF SWALLOWED.

You also need to use care not to mix it with other chemicals. Black powder with TRADITIONAL cleaners and lubricants is pretty non-toxic as shooting goes. Why make it nasty by replacing natural wax/oil mixtures with kroil? Also, why waste kroil on something that simple oils can do much better? I see no merit whatsoever in leaving a powerful penetrating oil on a firearm. You use it to free the guilty part, clean it off, then fix the problem causing the sticky action.

a 50/50 mix of kroil and hoppes works wonders cleaning benchrest rifles. never checked msds sheets. hell, it may be deadly but it cleans barrels slick! just my .02

I may be overly paranoid, but I have had some pretty severe skin reactions from kroil. It could be I'm just sensitive, but I thought I should post the warning. YRMV

It just plain stinks. I can't keep it in my gun safe, or in the house. Short story: Friend used my gun, cleaned it with Kroil, soaked into the wood. I had to take alcohol dampen the wood and burn it off till the stink disappeared.
