Lack of a tight seal on nipple threads a likely cause of misfires?

Start with isopropyl alcohol and clean the drum until you are tired . Needle out the nipple then more iso alcohol. Now get your die and check the threads on the nipple. Use a tap to check the threads in the drum. Dont let this go. The danger is real.
