.....arrived yesterday with a slight price increase + fuel surcharge pass through from UPS.

18mos ago a case cost $257.00 delivered, $10.28/lb.

This case cost $273.00 delivered, $10.94/lb.

A $.66/lb increase...but...argueably still the best blackpowder price/performer on the market!

If you don't mind me asking, where are you getting it from? Web site?

Is there a hazmat charge on that powder?
Yes...that was the total price delivered to my front porch...shipping/handling/hazmat...got it mixed 1-4F, 4-2F, and 20-3F

I see you got a can of 4F. How long does it take you to go through a pound of 4F? I have got a pound can I have been working on for a while, I have barely put a dent in it.

That is definitely cheaper in bulk if you can store that much. I bought a can of 2F at Vance's Gun Store this week, the only place in Central Ohio that handles real BP. Cans there were $16.99, with tax out the door it was $18.66 ...... for one can.

I've gotten up to about a can a year the past couple years...I use a pan primer with a 3grn plunger dispenser on it, which yields about 2300 primes from a can...and porobably closer to 2200 with a little spillage here and there...so I get one can per case since I get about 2300-2400 shots out of the remaining 24 cans of 3f/2F.

At this point in my life I'm shooting every weekend year round...last couple years I've averaged around 1800 shots at the range, plus hunting season where I'll have about 40 morning & afternoon hunts, using about 30grns per hunt, refreshing often.

I'd rather end up having an extra $10 can of 4F sitting around years from now to give away...than run out of 4F and be faced with ordering one can that might cost as much as $40-50 if I had to order it...which I wouldn't at that price of course...getting one can 4F per case ensures I won't run short.

If you shoot a lot it definitely seems the best way to go...it's a lot of $$ to lay out at once but in the long run, once you buy the first case, by the time you use it up you've saved almost enough to buy the next case free, and so on.....or find another shooter or two to split a case, etc.

With the political climate of pro/anti guns going back and forth, a case of powder makes sense to me. Never know when they may do a Brady bill on ML.

:hmm: ...my worries exactly...

But we all need to appreciate that fact that in spite of 9/11 and all the terrorist crap going on in the world, for once, we law abiding tax paying citizens were left alone with respect to blackpowder for recreational purposes and the regs didn't change.

ATF regs still allow storage of 50lbs BP per single family dwelling without any permits or special storage requirements, so stay stocked up in case something does happen...and if you have relatives / close friends nearby, well......

roundball,
Even at $10.94 a pound it is still
very reasonable. When I can find it at local gun
shops, which is rare, it will run $15 to $18
a pound. When I question them about the price
they claim its do to homeland security :bull: IMO
snake-eyes :hmm:

Dealer pricing;
Dealers have to have have a low explosives license from the feds. Think that's bout $300.00 to start with..
Storage container or bunker if they sell any amount of powder. Cost --?? And I'm not talking that 300.00 dollar 50 pound conatiner either!
State license fees?
Extra insurance?

Conclusion:
So at $15.00 to 18.00 per pound your getting a real deal.
=================

What I have found is at some of the events I've attended this year is, people are afraid to order 25 or 50 pounds and split the case up.

JJPyrotechnics told me point blank that wholesale is $9.40/lb...as I believe you already know, that line about "homeland security" is BS :shake:

IMO, to a great extent, a lot of people are followers and they are lazy...they want to take the easy way out and just stand around waiting to be told what they can do, instead of taking the initiative and going to the ATF site to read and understand it for themselves, and/or calling their state fire marshall's office for clarification, etc...so they live their lives off of inuendo, old wives tales, and rumor...which rarely ever ressembles the facts.

It is mentioned in the ATF regs that an individual cannot sell BP without the proper licenses, etc...but that statement is clearly in the context of not being in the business of ordering and selling BP without all the proper permits, licenses, ect.

It's intent is not aimed at a case being ordered by two recreational shooters/hunters simply splitting the cost of a case...there's no intent to "sell", it's not a business activity, no profit involved, does not exceed an individual's right to have his/her recreational amount on hand, etc...just a rare, occasional private instance.

Just my personal unvarnished view...

I have officers under my command that are assigned to our local ATF. I have asked them about this splitting of an order of powder bewtween two or more persons. There is no problem with doing this in their opinion but, they did suggest that the person who took delivery keep a record as to who he split the order with and how much, i.e. the number of cans, that person got and when. This would be helpful in the highly unlikely event there were ever any questions.

Makes sense in case some random audit of distributors records showed a dozen cases going to the same address during a certain period of time...
