I have been wanting to do another tomahawk so before it gets too hot here I decided to customize a Cold Steel spike tomahawk. I have done a few of these in years past but haven't done one in awhile. I thought with all the shutdowns why not. I wasn't sure what I wanted it to look like so I just let it unfold as I went. I still have a little bit to do so it isn't quite complete but it is very close.

I enjoy seeing those hawks, but carrying one around is difficult.

I'd keep that one on the wall, next to the guns and horns. Wouldn't want to mess up such nice work.

Here is a top view.

DD1, it really isn't all that expensive unless you buy a different haft instead of using the one that originally comes with the hawk, but it is labor intensive. The premium curly Maple, curly Hickory, or other exotic hafts can cost twice as much or more than the original hawk.

That's nice I like that a lot! I recently made a curly maple handled hawk too but just used a normal style forged head (I didnt make the head) and browned it and still thinking about some brass wire inlay on the handle.

Mike, You can get them form Track of the Wolf. I bought a really nice curly Hickory off eBxx but it cost quite a bit. You can also get them on a site called Hatchets and Axes I believe.

Redmoon, very nice! What did you use on the haft to get the curl to show up so well? That looks premium grade!

I use the same process on all my curly projects. I start with 1-2 generous applications of diluted tannic acid allowing it to dry between each application and then I use iron nitrate stain which needs to be 'blushed' (heated) between each application, initially it is a green color but after you get it heated up it turns orange/brown and lastly I rub it down with a boiled linseed oil soaked sos pad.
