Ok, I've seen posted on several sites where guys are having trouble getting this stuff to work, well I'm having trouble getting it to stop working, I've washed the barrel in hot water and baking soda as per the directions twice now, soaked in motor oil for three days an applied johnson paste wax like it directed and every day i'm still having to scale it as it keeps rusting, what can I do to neutralize this stuff.

Wow, try using cool water and mix the baking soda into a paste. The baking soda paste mix should/will turn brownish while rubbing it around on the barrel. I mean ya gotta git that stuff on there thick and rubbed down into the rust pits,,
Scaling after oiling wow!
HOT WATER on cool metal surfaces can cause what's called "flash rust". It's basically rapid condensation forming on the surface of the metal and starting the rusting all over again.
That's why i always use "tepid" water (baby bath temp.) for cleaning bp bores and locks.

Ok, I mixed a box of baking soda in a pot of water I heated on the stove, didn't mix it just to a paste I'll try that and use an old tooth brush to see if that will work. Thanks.

IMO, if you've applied motor oil and wax you need to remove all traces of them before any neutrilizing solution can have any effect on the browning.

Both of these things will protect the existing browning from any water based solution you want to apply.

Because of LMF's strong rusting action, I stopped using baking soda and now use household ammonia. Works like a champ. Small parts are submerged and a paint brush is used on bbls. The ammonia can be reused.....Fred

So Fred, your saying just wash it good with house hold ammonia and that will neutralize it???
Thanks, Chris

I've used both baking soda and follow it up with household ammonia too. Works well if the baking soda by itself doesn't.

I just leave the small parts submerged in the ammonia for 5 mins. and apply the ammonia on the bbl w/ a paint brush for a couple of minutes. A hot water rinse and then an application of Oxyoke 1000 or whatever applied w/ 0000 stl wool, a wipe off and a coat of auto wax completes the job.Yes...the household ammonia which is an alkali kills the acid reaction of LMF. Good luck....Fred

Having made the same mistake...The key is heating the barrel after you have used the baking soada and water. Get a tourch and heat it up untill you SEE the water evaporating out of the color...just hotter then you want to touch with a bare hand. THEN soak in/with motor oil. Problem solved. Otherwise you are trapping water in the mix, under the oil and the rusting starts again.
