SWMBO made me sell off 200 lbs of my lead because we will be moving. I still have 100-150 lbs or thereabout. She wants me to get rid of that, too. I don't know how much I'll be able to keep :idunno:

She also wants me to get rid of all my powder and loaded ammo as well. :cursing:

But marriage is compromise. You've got to learn to negotiate and what to put on the table. Some things are non-negotiable. But that was made plain in the "prenuptials". I made sure her Daddy had taught her to shoot and fish. :thumbsup:

It is very wrong for her to even ask you to purge you irreplaceable belongings. Contemptuous. Do not seek her approval or even discuss the issue any more.

Hire a rigger for the heavy stuff.

Move the important stuff yourself.

Do not trust movers with things you value.

Since we both live in Virginia, you could simply call Coot's Hazardous Waste Disposal Service - I will dispose of lead & powder for a very reasonable fee. :grin:

I won't assume SWMBO doesn't have good reasoning, but I don't see why moving would necessitate unloading all that ammo/lead. If my wife were to make a similar demand it would only be because I already insisted on her unloading her books, in which case I would call it a very fair deal and put the lead on Craigslist.

I also can't figure out why people have had to go through so much trouble to move lead. Is it illegal or something?

Lead and ammo is replaceable. Why are you moving? will lead/powder be difficult to aquire after the move?

One thing I have learned about women(mine) is they are smart but they dont think "right". I vote for sneaking it along or calling ahead and have an equal amount ready to pick up at the new place?

My comment was based on assumption the time sentenced to the doghouse would be equal for standing up to SWMBO or getting caught while hiding it!!

What are the moving company's prices on a per pound basis? You might think of boxing it all up in to one of those USPS flat rate boxes and mailing it to yourself. Reinforce the internal contents and how they're packed though, because it might have a tendency to bust out the ends and corners.

Where do you find that much usable lead. I've used wheel weights for fishing weights but for round balls I've always used plumbers lead. The scrap lead I've found I test with my finger nail. If it cuts it on the surface then it's soft enough to make in to round balls. Plumbers lead the last I bought was $19.00 for a 5 lb puck. getting pretty high.

i`ve had a lot of luck recently with the soft stick on wheel weights in the local area, the tire shops around here just want a new bucket to replace the one you take. i get about 50% zinc/lead mix and iron, the rest is useable lead with maybe 25% of that being the stick on type.

I'm keeping the zinc/lead mix for sailboat ballast. i have no idea how much i have stashed under the workshop

Not necessarily. :nono:
These days wheel weights, depending on manufacturer, can be made of almost anything. The tire shop I use is owned by and avid modern pistol shooter. He casts and reloads a lot of ammo. Of course, his source of lead is his own shop. He says there is no consistency between makes or styles of weights and that pure lead ones are a thing of the past.

its the soft stick on ones i use mostly. lots of stick on iron and zinc. pretty much my only lead source till i redo my roof in the spring. fair amount of flashing up there, 70+ years old.
