leather pants drying out need

I just purchased a set of buck skins at a gun show great price $40. I have other sets that are deer skin commercial tanned not brain tanned that are nice and soft and pliable. But this set seems a little dry and not as soft. (Not sure its deer hide ) I was thinkin to re wet with some murffys oil soap to soften.
What say y'all.

The pants and pull over shirt are smooth side out and feels a bite like card board. Just not soft and supple. Other than that they are a great set for my 15 yr old grandson.

I'd start by breaking them over a porch railing, or a piece of strung up cable or something similar. Soak them in water overnight then rub them back and forth over the cable or the smooth edge of a railing until you are really sick and tired of doing it, then keep going some more........

You are trying to stretch and soften it back up by flexing it every which way possible.

Thats what iI was thinkin soaking then let dry while working the leather.
Cant really hurt . Just wondering what others do.

I have washed commercial tanned buck skin on gentle cycle with a small amount of Tide. Then lowest heat tumble drying till mostly dry. If they have bead work you may not want to try this. Mine came out clean and soft.

I'm thinking that the "break in" option seems best. Treat them like your making brain tan from scratch.

There was a gentleman on here making very well made propper deerskin breeches, he had a topic on it, but I can't remember his screen name. If I come up with it, I'll post it here and tryptophan draw his attention to your situation.

Edit: it was @andy52 I was trying to think of. I'm curious about his take on the construction of those (something looks off to me regarding the fly, but I'm no expert) and how he would proceed.

Thank you. I have a lot of leather needing attention in my classic cars. Yours is a leather cleaner and protector and does not darken leather! Just bought some from your link to Amazon.
