Let's Talk About Real Pine Tree Turpentine and BLO.

Very seldom do I find something that I have, but forgot about. Usually it stays lost in the mess. But today I was in my outside shop working on a project, moved a few things on a top shelf and out pops this. 3/4 full. Now I can cross that off my to buy list. Have absolutely no recollection of buying it.

Real pine tree gum spirits of turpentine is good for treating minor cuts. My wifes Grandpa swore by the stuff. This bottle is from the late 60's or early 70's.

This stuff never goes bad. The container will not outlast the contents. All my rags that touch this stuff are tossed outside. Spontaneous combustion is an amazing thing.

It will certainly do that. I toss all my rags in our outside burn barrel. I remember a few years back I was working on a wood project using BLO. It was in the summer working in my outside shop and I threw some rags in a heap on the concrete to use the next day. Next day they were hot and starting to smoke!!!! Doesn’t take long under the right conditions.

This looks intriguing but I'm not sure what would define "oil varnish"?

Let's discuss real pine tree based turpentine and using it to thin BLO. 1:1 mix ratio.

I'm reading that real turpentine is hard to come by. I'm reading that most of what's out there is fake turpentine.

If you guys know of a brand of real turpentine that smells like Christmas morning, let me know.

Natural oil resins used in mfg. Non-urethane. Urethane varnishes were first marketed as liquid plastic.

Yes the term oil varnish is very broad. Tung oil is a varnish and its main ingredient is nut oil. We could go on and on. But To me blo is an amazing mostly natural product in its true form. Anyone ever coat a gunbarrel and see how it holds up?

I bought this at a flea market about twenty years ago, unopened. I guess it is about as pure as it gets, heck its approved by the U.S. Naval Stores Act!!!

Love the smell of it.
