I'm new to ML and through some research decided I wanted a Lyman .54 because I am left handed.
Looked a few places and found a LH Great Plains Rifle new for $360 so I bought it. Love the way it feels, can shoot RB or conical and looks authentic. Is there any other choices out there that you feel would be better for any reason, Hunting, Accuracy, anything?
Thanks From Wisconsin

I've heard nothing but good about the GPRs. You could spend a significantly larger amount of money to get a semi- or full-custom rifle that would be considered more historically correct, but as far as function, accuracy, and (in my opinion, and I'm actually not partial to plains-style rifles) looks go, you won't be able to improve on what you have, since obviously you're happy with it. Good shooting!

I have a 50cal left hand GPR from lyman. At the time I bought mine I wasnt shooting round ball so I bought the hunter with the fast twist. It does great on conicals but Im not sure it would do well with prb. Which twist did you get  I would like to put a new 40cal slow twist barrel on mine and just use it for target as I now hunt with a 62cal flint english game gun.

I have a GP Hunter and love shooting it. I hope you find the same satisfaction with your new BP rifle as I did.

Have fun and make a lot of smoke!

Bigbang,
I bought the standard rifle w/ the 1:60 twist because I want to hunt with round balls and I believe it is much cheaper to paper punch than with conicals. Man the smile I get when that gun goes off!! Haven't felt that type of happy in awhile almost giddy. :rotf:

You definitely have no reason to try to find something better! Unless you consider being giddily happy to be a bad thing.... :hatsoff:

I own a 54 caliber LH Lyman GPR with 1:60 twist barrel and I also have the Hunter barrel in 54 at 1:32 twist that I interchange back and forth to the same stock and I love the gun... as I can shoot either conicals in 1:32 twist barrel for hunting and PRB in 1:60 twist for hunting or target shooting. I also own 3 T/C Renegades with one of those being LH as well. The Lyman GPR is a nice rifle and I have had no problems with mine whatsoever! I can recommend the Lyman GPR to anyone and I have 2 rifles in one with the extra barrel I purchased from Lyman. Have Lyman 57 peep sight installed on tang too and love it.

I think you made an excellent choice with the GPR, I own both the percussion and flint version, both left handed. Also own the lyman trade and deerstalker, both left handed. Not only does Lyman make good rifles, they support us folks in our right mind. Traditions makes a nice hawkins percussion in LH version as well.
Recommend the CCI magnum primers, I have tried others and have had misfires, never with the cci mags.

Thanks to all you lefties out there really think I done good on this choice from all your comments!!

I've got one in .54. It's my favorite rifle by far. I have the 1:60 and 1:32 twist barrels for it and it's a real shooter.
