This came in the mail Friday. My second book in the Longrifle series. I am studying carving patterns on southern long rifles having wooden patch boxes. I hope to improve my carving and be able to incorporate a simple but PC pattern on my next build.

With this book , your on the right track. Back in the early 1970's , I used to go to a copy shop, and blow these pictures up to life size , using my own length of pull for reference.. Every now and then , in my dusty shop library , I run across one of my old blow ups , and smile at my first attempts to get stock architecture correct. You've already proven your an intelligent guy , just do it. Ask lotsa questions..........oldwood

Thank you, I have a question. What technique did you use to get proper size for longrifle builds. I planned on using trial and error by placing enlarged prints against the stock until I found a visual appealing scale that looked similar to the one in my chosen image. Any suggestions?

Using the enlarged image of the butt stock , which you matched to your Length of Pull. (Hope you know what LOP is , and how to measure it ), The image will automatically render the drop at the wrist. Think you're on the right track , Are you cutting the stock from a blank for a scratch build , or using a pre- carved ?? Most of what I noted so far , is for setting the pattern up to cut a blank from a plank.

Lol, I'm familiar with LOP and measurement, I understand your question. And, laugh at my earlier post. I will be using a pre-carved stock, probably a kit. I understand the basics of carving but the more I read about long rifle carving the more I realize how much I don't know. I will be spending a lot of practice time on scrap. Practicing my drawing, layout and carving. I will only be using incise, chip and simple relief carving.
