Lions mane mushroom/ chicken of the woods

Hen of the woods grows on the ground but is probably attached to the roots of oaks. I’ve only found it on very large old oaks and usually they don’t look real good. Partly dead or large hollows.
Hen of the woods is brown and looks kind of like a hen sitting on a nest.

I want to say these were orangy, but definitely not on the trunk, they were on the ground at the base of the tree. The tree seems pretty healthy. The worms were tiny and white. Looked like grains of rice, but no maggots. Didn't really want to be picking them out of my teeth.

I need to check the tree I found one of the orange ones on 2 years ago. Haven't been by it this fall.

I haven't found any puff balls this year, my favorite. I just slice them and fry them in butter. They are easy to safely identify, too. If white inside, they are good to eat. Don't eat one that is black inside.

I have found chicken of the woods growing on cherry trees also, and I have seen chicken of the woods coming out of the ground where the root systems are.

I do know you have to eat small amounts at first because they can make a person pretty gassey

This is a long gone by hen of the woods, I check the base of big oaks for these when I’m deer hunting in November because if I go back the following year they will be there again.

I did return to the same tree, about the same time as last year. No sign of mushrooms.
