load 5 or 6 chambers

Some people load all six, others only five. The hammer is kept down on an empty chamber for safey reasons by those who load five. Some use the cylinder pins for a safety, and load all six. It has never really been a concern for me. When at the range, I load six. The times I have carried the revolver, I have loaded six. The revolver was in a holster and secured. If I didn't feel comfortable for whatever reason, I would load only five. That is a personal choice for me.

I still have ten fingers and ten toes, and no negligent discharges.

I load 5 for target shooting. I am prepping for competition and most stages are 10 shots. Loading twice 5 each time will become habit for me. When I carry, I carry my .32 in my pocket or a springfield arms xd. If I REALLY had to carry it, I'd load 6 and keep it in the notch between cylinders. My question is who would carry one loaded, and why? I don't think there is a thing in the world wrong with it, if you are safe in general, I just wonder why someone might carry a loaded cap and ball revolver?

I usually only shoot at the range - and I load all six chambers. Loading five at the range is a waste of time and effort, I think. As soon as I get six loaded (or five, it that were my choice, which it isn't), the next thing I do is cap the chambers and shoot them all off. Then reload.

Loading five rather than six takes 20% more time. Get the powder and wads out, pull out the powder flask and measurer, load, get the balls, and ram.

If I were walking around, still-hunting, or being on guard for snakes, then I would load five.

By the way, some BP cylinders don't have those pins in between chambers.

By the way, when loading just five at the range, I waste time spinning and looking at the cylinder to make sure I'm skipping capping the empty chamber. And then, I have to spin it to start shooting on the first loaded chamber. PITA.

I only load one...that way the hammer can fall
accidentally five times before I realize
I am carring a loaded gun and I should be careful.

I misspoke. I should have said, "If I were to load just five at the range." As I stated, I load six at the range. How many do you load, and why?

i load all 6 in my Remington new army, i just set the hammer down on one of the safety notches.

I load 5 at the range. I have never loaded it otherwise. I am prepping to compete in NMLRA and their rules prohibit more than 5 being loaded at one time. 5 and then 5 is easier shooting a 10 round match. You load the same both times vs. 6 and then 4.

Me too, I load 6 when I carry it as a woods gun, which I do a lot, or if I'm carrying it hunting. The only time I only load 5 is at a Cowboy Shooting competition, per the rules.

I've heard this question before (a lot). One, its a single action revolver, there's just about nothing more reliable than a single action revolver (in repeating handguns). Two, its a .44, and even in BP it will likely take care of just about anything I'm likely to have trouble with. I'm not in bear country, my 'problems' are occasional aggressive four-legged critters like raccoons or foxes. Three, I like it. I've heard ALL the comments about about it being a poor (stupid/silly/not serious/juvenile/etc) choice. So if someone feels that way, fine, carry something else. :blah:

My 6 shot Pietta .36 has no safety pins, load five when I carry in a loose but deep holster with no thong. My 5 shot Uberti .31 has one safety pin, load five and carry in a tight holster with a hammer thong. My Uberti dragoon has one safety pin, load 6 and carry in a tight full flap holster.

Oh yeah, the only pistols I own are cap and ball; any pistol I carry is a cap and ball. Loaded.

Warmest Regards,
Robert
