I just fixed an old CVA Derringer pistol for my brother. Whats the load recommendation for this?
Its a 45 cal blackpowder. Thats all it says on the barrel and he doesnt have the paperwork for it anymore. He bought it back in the early 80's and its been setting in his garage ever since. Were gonna fire it up. :hmm:

:agree: That 15-20gr of FFFg range sounds about right. I recall having had a homemade powder measure from a cut down cartridge case that held 18gr of FFFg that I used for mine.

I'll see if I can dig up the info for that one for you, I had one of those quite a few years ago...

I agree with Rebel. The DGW catolog lists 15 grains as the recommended load for their .45 cal. Philadelphia Derringer kit. Their recommended loads seem to be extremely cautious.

Thanks for the input guys.
Since 15-20 grains is cautious. What is the maximum load for this thing?
Just wondering what the buffer range is of being safe.

Thanky Thanky :peace:

I've had several of those CVA derringers over the years, the lock is pretty sorry but the barrel is stout. I remember loading up the first one with 15gr ffg. Fired it at a stack of pine lumber in my basement. The ball smacked me in the chest after bouncing off the first board! I bumped the charge to 40 gr. as a standard load.
I had one reamed out to .500 smooth bore. It was more accurate than it had been as a .45 rifled.
:haha: :haha: :haha:

Your right about the lock! Not the best around! Mine broke, so now I just look at it from time to time. Those things are real tack drivers, mine grouped into about a foot at 15 yds! I was using 20gr. 3F. Hey, there belly guns after all, better than using a rock!

I shoot 45grn of Pyrodex in mine. Seems to work ok. Havent shot it for accuracy yet just playing with it while shooting the rifle. Seems that without sights trying for accuracy is kinda like wishful thinking ::
