loads for a .28guage smooth

just ordered a early english fowler in .28guage now to find some suggested loads for it any ideas. up till now ive only shot a .20guage.

In my 28 bore fusil I use 60gr 3f and a .527 RB with .015 pre-lubed patch.
In my 28 bore canoe gun, I use 60gr 2f with 1oz shot.

So far, I've gotten best results in my 28 with 60 grains 3f, two hard card overpowder wads and one ounce of #6 shot (70 grains volume measure), topped with a Styrofoam overshot card. My gun has a 30" barrel with a slight jug choke that puts about 50% of its' pellets into a 30" circle at 40 yards. That is "improved cylinder" by the standards and believe me, it is MUCH improved over a straight cylinder. :grin:

Mine are:

54cal/.28ga Small Game Shot Load

- 70grns Goex 3F
- Two .54cal Oxyoke Wonderwads
- 1+1/8oz #6 lead hard shot
- Circle Fly over shot card
Excellent, even 2 foot pattern at 25yds, several #6’s in a coke can size target at 25yds


54cal smoothbore patched ball load

- 70/80/90grns Goex 3F
-.54cal Oxyoke Wonderwad
-.010” prelubed plain cotton patch
- Hornady .530 ball
Excellent, all groupd into a 3” aim point sticker at 50yds, sitting in a chair to simulate a treestand

In my 28 guage, I used 50 gr. of FFg and 5/8 oz of shot.
One hard card over powder then fiber wad, shot and
one over shot card.
Worked very well for me.
I don’t think that more is always better.
