I have a .40 caliber percussion rifle with a lock that has R Kern stamped into the lock plate. I have not been able to dig up any information on that name. I assume it is the maker. Does anyone have any information regarding this lock?

You are more likely to find Maker Identification on the inside of the lockplate, than on the outside. Have you removed the lock from the gun, and checked that back side?

Robert Kern deceased for some years now. Made castings of ML gun parts and lock kits. most were marked. NOS parts are still around and turn up from time to time.
